A federal lawsuit to stop the proposed merger of American Airlines and US Airways could be good for penny-pinching fliers. The legal challenge filed in August by the U.S. Department of Justice says that the deal to create the world's largest carrier would cut competition and lead to higher fares. Until the lawsuit is settled or won by either side, don't expect the two airlines to raise fares and give federal authorities more reason to fight the merger, said Rick Seaney, chief executive of the fare monitoring site Farecompare.com.

Hawaiian Airlines and Tourism New Zealand have teamed up to offer a package starting at $1,210 that covers round-trip airfare, a night's stay in Auckland and a seven-day car rental. The fare is good from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and other western U.S. cities, but only until the end of the month. The deal: All About Tours makes reservations for the package that includes: --Round-trip airfare on Hawaiian Airlines to Auckland, with a stop in Honolulu; --One night with breakfast at the Copthorne Hotel Auckland HarbourCity ; --Seven days car rental with unlimited mileage.

The furlough of air traffic controllers imposed by the federal sequester in April lasted only a week. But statistics released Thursday show that the resulting delays hurt the on-time performance of the airline industry for the entire month. The on-time rating for the nation's airlines dropped to 77.3% in April, compared to 86.3% for April of 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. The carriers also reported canceling 1.8% of their flights in April, up from 1.0% in the same month in 2012, according to the federal agency.

Given a choice between flying next to a crying baby or a smelly passenger, 63% of fliers would choose the crying baby over the stinky seat companion. This was one of several interesting findings of the 2013 EquiTrend Study by Harris Interactive , which in March polled 2,276 adults who agreed to be surveyed. According to the survey, 58% of fliers who fly once a year or more are willing to pay for extra legroom on a flight of three hours or more, while 33% will pony up fees for more space on less than two-hour flights.
