Ask anyone what they think about airline food, and they're likely to say "I don't think of it at all because there isn't any. " But airlines do sell or offer snack boxes and meals, and health blogger and Diet Detective Charles Stuart Platkin each year rates the airlines with the most healthful fare. Virgin America came in first among a dozen airlines this year for its snacks (low-calorie PopChips and nuts) and more substantial options such as a high-protein turkey sandwich and roasted pear and arugula salad.

Too many people see health food as medicine, and that is one thing that keeps them from eating healthfully, says Dr. Andrew Weil. In his new cookbook, written with Sam Fox and Michael Stebner, he tries to dispel the notion that delicious food and healthful food are exclusive. The book is called "True Food" (Little, Brown and Co., $29.99), which Weil said Thursday in a telephone interview, means "real food first of all. I think a lot of what people eat is not real food. " "I am a good home cook, and I like dishes that are simple, that have bold flavors, that are relatively easy to prepare," he said.

Packaged foods can be hard - not to cook, necessarily, but to choose. Deciphering the many labels can be confusing, with nutritional information, claims such as “reduced fat” and advertising perhaps blending together among the many products on a shelf. Researchers in this country and others have been working to find a system of icons to put on the front of packages to help shoppers sort through the cacophony to figure out which products are healthful. In a new study published Tuesday in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease, researchers - from Yale and Cornell universities and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill -- found two styles of labels they said hold promise.

The temperature had soared to nearly 100 degrees by late morning in Palos Verdes Estates, making it a fine day to cool off at the beach or a water park. Instead, Chloe Solandt, her face pink from heat and sun, was sanding boards and stomping through dirt as she and 150 or so other volunteers built an edible garden on a one-acre hillside plot at Valmonte School, an early learning center. "I'm really interested in agriculture and food sustainability," said Solandt, 17, a senior at Palos Verdes High School.

Taco Bell has sold more than 200 million Doritos-flavored tacos since the fast-food treat debuted in March, making it the most successful new product in the chain's 50-year history. I don't know whether this is a tribute to Taco Bell's marketing skill or a commentary on the culinary tastes of the American people. The $1.29 Doritos Locos taco features a nacho cheese-flavored Doritos shell. It's stuffed with seasoned beef, lettuce and tomatoes, and served in a Doritos-branded "taco jacket.

I was elbow deep in poultry, sweating, anxious, peering at the dense page of instructions in the book laid out before me. It was the first duck I'd ever tried to bone, and I was stuck. Just as New Yorkers are adjusting to the idea of doing without super-sized sugary sodas, those on the hunt for fattening food and drink could be facing another hurdle. Walt Disney Co., acknowledging the powerful role that television can play in influencing children's behavior, announced that it has instituted a junk-food advertising ban on programs for kids. Along with its current healthful-foods initiative in its theme parks, Disney will begin imposing strict new standards for food and beverage advertising on its boy-centric network Disney XD, during Saturday morning shows on Disney-owned ABC television stations, on Radio Disney and online. Disney Channel and Disney Junior, which are not ad-supported but receive brand sponsorships, also would be covered under the nutrition guidelines.

HBO's four-part documentary, " The Weight of the Nation ," was the subject of much commentary this week, with critics of all stripes complaining that the program didn't focus on the right issues. "Why doesn't HBO's new series, 'The Weight of the Nation,' even mention addiction?" asked the Fix's Susan Cheever . "We keep getting fatter and fatter because we are overlooking, if not ignoring, an important cause of obesity -- addiction. Certain foods, like certain drinks, trigger an addictive reaction in many people.
