The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration on Monday released the names, listed by specialty, of health care professionals who the government says have defaulted on their student loans. The last known city of residence, amount owed, school attended, and estimated date of separation also were given. Below are the Orange County practitioners included on the federal list. According to the HRSA, they failed to establish repayment schedules.

Those who work with the terminally ill in Orange County were either appalled or thrilled by a Michigan jury verdict Monday that Dr. Jack Kevorkian broke no law by assisting in the suicide of a 30-year-old man with Lou Gehrig's disease. The decision was welcomed by those who hope it will advance the cause of freedom of choice for the dying but decried by those who fear it may give doctors a too-easy option to finding ways to relieve the pain of the terminally ill.

When Mary Owen became the nurse epidemiologist at Martin Luther Hospital in Anaheim in 1979, most hospitals were primarily concerned that doctors and nurses might carelessly infect their patients with harmful bacteria. But because of the current fear of AIDS, she says, many hospitals have put new emphasis on protecting doctors and nurses against patients infected with the deadly disease.

Unemployment in California rose sharply in December to 9.3%, its highest level in 15 years, as the state's jobless rolls swelled to 1.7 million. More than 78,000 people lost their jobs in December, and thousands more have received pink slips so far this month. Economists said layoffs were likely to remain heavy during the first half of 2009 and could reach as high as 11%.
