As the media began to file out of the Clippers' practice facility Thursday, Hedo Turkoglu was seen getting out of a car and talking to Gary Sacks, the Clippers' vice president of basketball operations. Turkoglu, 34, had come from Orlando Thursday morning to the Clippers' practice facility for his workout with the team in Playa Vista. The Clippers watched Turkoglu work out in Orlando over the weekend and decided the 6-10 forward was worth bringing out to showcase his skills in front of Clippers Coach Doc Rivers and his staff.

Darren Collison's job when Chris Paul sat out 18 games because of a separated right shoulder was to help the Clippers stay the course without their All-Star point guard. Collison did, leaving Clippers Coach Doc Rivers to say they "weathered the storm" with Paul down. Paul was back in the starting lineup Sunday night against the Philadelphia 76ers and Collison was back playing with the second unit. "DC was the key," Rivers said. "He logged a lot of minutes. Some of the things that he was doing well for us he couldn't do anymore.

As expected, the Clippers on Thursday signed free agent forward Hedo Turkoglu for the rest of the season, with the contract believed to be for a prorated portion of the veteran's minimum of about $1.4 million. Turkoglu, who turns 35 in March, will give the Clippers a 6-foot-10 veteran with excellent ball-handling skills and shooting touch. He also has extensive playoff experience, having reached the NBA Finals in 2009 with the Orlando Magic. "He's another shooter," Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said Wednesday before his team's come-from-behind 129-127 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center.

The Clippers returned home for the first time since Jan. 16, fresh off a successful seven-game, 11-day trip that took them to some of the coldest parts of the country. They met the challenge of playing hard in the final game in Milwaukee on Monday, and the win gave them a 5-2 record on the trip. But the Clippers now face the task of finding enough energy to play the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night at Staples Center. "The toughest game is always the first one when you come off a long road trip," guard Jamal Crawford said Monday night.

The Phoenix Suns have acquired forward Hedo Turkoglu in a trade that sends guard Leandro Barbosa and forward Dwayne Jones to Toronto. The deal gives the Suns a third forward in their attempt to replace free agent Amare Stoudemire . Phoenix signed swingman Josh Childress in a sign-and-trade deal with Atlanta earlier Wednesday and picked up Hakim Warrick in a similar swap with Chicago. Turkoglu spent one disappointing season with the Raptors, averaging 11.3 points after being named the NBA's most improved player with Orlando the year before as the Magic reached the NBA Finals.

Hedo Turkoglu will delve into the free-agent market on July 1, quickly testing whether the Orlando Magic can keep a core of key players together who led the club to an appearance in the NBA Finals. A day after losing the title series to the Lakers, the agent for Turkoglu told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that the Magic small forward would opt out of his contract and become a free agent in two weeks. "It would make sense for him to opt out," Lon Babby, Turkoglu's agent, said by phone.

Another day has passed, so of course that just means Dwight Howard remains in limbo. It also means the Lakers continue weighing the financial ramifications as they negotiate with the Orlando Magic to acquire the disgruntled center. Even with more punitive tax measures stemming from the NBA's new labor deal, the Lakers stays intent on winning a championship. They showed that by signing veteran elite point guard Steve Nash to a three-year, $27-million deal. But to what degree do the Lakers share the mind-set with Howard?

Coach Doc Rivers gave a strong indication Tuesday that the Clippers soon could be signing free-agent forward Hedo Turkoglu. Asked before practice if he could see the Clippers signing Turkoglu to a contract, Rivers said, "We could, yeah. We're looking at him strong. I can say that much. " The Clippers have a full 15-man roster and would have to waive a player before they could sign Turkoglu. But a Turkoglu deal could be done as soon as Wednesday or Thursday, the day the Clippers leave for a seven-game, 12-day trip.

The math is simple for Doc Rivers: Seven games in seven cities means he'll have to pack seven suits. The Clippers' coach gave up on mixing and matching outfits on long trips awhile back. "I tried that once," Rivers said, "and I thought I had black pants and the jacket was black and I almost got away with it and a player on another team noticed it. " The Clippers will also have to tote an extra set of uniforms after signing free-agent forward Hedo Turkoglu as expected Thursday, giving them a different look on a lengthy trip that starts Friday against the New York Knicks.

Doc Rivers interrupted a reporter when the name Hedo Turkoglu came up. "How do you pronounce his name?" the Clippers' coach asked. "Because I need to get used to that. " For the record, it's HEE-doh TURK-ah-lou. Clippers broadcaster Ralph Lawler could be saying it a lot after Rivers acknowledged Wednesday evening that the team anticipated signing the free-agent forward once he completed a physical. Rivers said Turkoglu could join the Clippers by the time they open a seven-game, 11-day trip Friday against the New York Knicks.

The Clippers are still making moves to improve their team. They re-signed point guard Maalik Wayns on Wednesday, but perhaps the best news was hearing Coach Doc Rivers say that guard J.J. Redick , who has been out since Nov. 29 because of a broken right wrist and torn ligaments on the side of the wrist, "has a very good chance of playing Friday" against the Lakers. "If he's ready, we'll probably start him," Rivers said. "If he's ready for those type of minutes. I don't think he would be. But I don't know.

DALLAS - Shawne Williams was waived Monday, but the Lakers don't plan on filling his roster spot any time soon. Unless, of course, another guard is injured. The Lakers were down to 14 players, one below the NBA maximum, after cutting Williams before his contract became guaranteed the rest of the season. They want to maintain roster flexibility and will not add free-agent forward Hedo Turkoglu because they think his skills are declining. And, of greater importance, they have two healthy guards, Kendall Marshall and Jodie Meeks . There's a just-in-case wariness permeating the Lakers while Kobe Bryant , Steve Nash , Steve Blake , Jordan Farmar and Xavier Henry sit out with injuries.
