From towel-swatting and toilet-flushing to communal dressing and crying the blues, every locker room tells a story. Heidi Duckler, artistic director of locally based Collage Dance Theatre, endeavors to tell hers in "Locker Rumors," a 75-minute dance-theater piece that premiered Thursday in the women's locker room at Los Angeles Valley College.

The new "Feet Speak" series at Occidental College co-opted shopworn Dance Kaleidoscope methodology on Friday with a program of ill-assorted, locally based artists assigned a snappy, meaningless title ("Structured/Unstructured") and set forth to be what the program notes called "outrageous, creative, challenging, provocative and eclectic" without much quality control.

With their emphasis on spoken and graphic images that link her personal life to the mythic subtexts of American advertising, Heidi Duckler's site-specific performance events for Collage Dance Theatre increasingly belong to the art world far more than the realm of dance. Performed Thursday in and around an empty swimming pool at the Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys Recreation Center, Duckler's new "Life in the Lap Lane" uses dance merely as a garnish.

In real estate, the prevailing axiom is "location, location, location." In Collage Dance Theatre's latest work, "Sub Versions," which opened Saturday at the Subway Terminal Building in downtown Los Angeles, this dictum proved formidable. Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of the piece, though, was the fact that artistic director-choreographer Heidi Duckler actually thought to stage her site-specific work in this labyrinth of yore.

It's hard to shake the feeling that Heidi Duckler's new "Out of Circulation" ought to be funnier than it is. Or nastier than it is. The first year of Occidental College's enterprising Feet Speak dance series and Collage Dance Theatre's site-specific "Most Wanted" project at the Lincoln Heights jail dominated the seventh annual Lester Horton Dance Awards, announced Friday on the plaza of the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A. in conjunction with the Dance Kaleidoscope festival.

Heidi Duckler has put on dance productions on a rooftop, in an abandoned jail as well as a vacant gas station. Now she's rehearsing students at North Hollywood High school for a program that will take place in a women's locker room. And, naturally, the students are practicing their moves in the school's girls' locker room. "This is an interesting place," said Duckler, artistic director of Collage Dance Theatre, which is producing the program.
