The excitement of site-specific performance events comes from the process of discovery: watching a creative artist explore, illuminate and be influenced by an unusual (non-theatrical) environment. Unfortunately, the opening program of Vision Interarts' four-night "Park Plaza: Dance and Performance" series, Thursday at the superbly ornate and atmospheric Park Plaza Hotel near MacArthur Park, completely missed the point.

If you developed a cynical perspective on calamity that fused the devastating hurricanes coming from the Caribbean with the stock market crises caused by disintegrating world economies, you might end up with something like the premise of "Liquid Assets," the latest site-specific social satire by the locally based Collage Dance Theatre.

You saw the movie ("Beowulf"). You heard the opera ("Grendel"). You rented the other movie ("Beowulf & Grendel"), and here comes the updated, alternative, multidisciplinary stage version: "My Beowulf," performed Friday by the locally based Collage Dance Theatre in the State Playhouse at Cal State L.A. Normally, Collage's artistic director, Heidi Duckler, takes on site-specific projects that explore atmospheric architectural monuments: an abandoned jail, a disintegrating hotel, etc.

The scent of night-blooming jasmine is heady. A nearly full moon peeks through towering pines. And amid the din of choppers, bullets and crunching gravel, bodies drop to the tune of a mournful bagpipe as a dazed-looking bride wails, her voluminous white dress in shreds. It's the final scene of "C'opera," a fusion of movement and music that could have been cooked up only by Heidi Duckler, artistic director of L.A.

Think pink if you visit Perino's Restaurant for Collage Dance Theatre's latest site-specific extravaganza, "A Hunger Artist." The company wants its audiences to match the decor of this once-fabled Hollywood hangout in the mid-Wilshire area -- so pink walls, pink booths, pink lighting and pink costumes enforce a rosy, cozy opulence made even more lush by a few contrasting details, such as the remaining black wrought-iron flamingos out front.

In its restless forays into site-specific social satire, Heidi Duckler's Collage Dance Theatre has tried its hand at performance art, opera, movement theater, guided tours of architectural curiosities and even some quasi-nostalgic pop dancing. But Friday, this adventuresome local ensemble attempted a double whammy: a one-act ice show that turned out to be a martial arts epic -- with an 8th century Anglo-Saxon classic as its source.
