A helicopter on a sightseeing trip around Manhattan and carrying four tourists and a pilot went down in the East River, bursting into flames after it crashed into the water near a helipad, authorities said. Police divers and a rescuer in a life raft aided the passengers and pilot, with some of the survivors holding onto a board extended by the boater until help arrived, witnesses said. Eight people, including three rescuers, were taken to the hospital.

A medical helicopter crashed in northern New York after picking up an injured hunter, killing all three people on board. The helicopter crashed Thursday night near Jerusalem, about 60 miles southeast of Rochester, N.Y., soon after picking up the hunter, who had apparently suffered severe internal injuries in a fall from a tree. The pilot and a medical technician were the other victims. The aircraft from Canandaigua, N.Y., was headed to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
