And then the local football coach and his wife were arrested for allegedly providing sex to players. If a town can be turned on its head, this place is testimony: Probably nothing else could so rattle a community and attract out-of-town reporters like moths swarming to a spotlight. The fast-moving Silver fire in Riverside County grew significantly in size to roughly 2,500 acres, forcing evacuations and the closure of Highway 243 near Banning. Footage from news helicopters showed several structures on fire in the communities of Poppet Flats, Twin Pines and Silent Valley, where authorities had issued mandatory evacuation orders within the last hour. CalFire spokesman Daniel Berlant said incident commanders had a “significant number of fire engines that are assigned to structure defense.” No injuries had been immediately reported.

The Woodbridge reserve forward believed that she could provide the spark to help Woodbridge overpower Hemet. Weaver promised herself that if her opportunity came, it would not go wasted. Promise kept.

They are playing football at Hemet High this season, which wouldn't be surprising except for the off-field controversy that has plagued the Bulldogs. This town was turned upside down last spring with revelation of a sex scandal involving then-football coach Randy Brown, his wife and members of the football team. Now, six months later, the Browns have moved and the story is no longer the topic of conversation at every coffee shop in town.

Jamie Oenning daydreamed about Saturday's championship and visualized the ball in her hands when the clock ticked down to zero. Before the game, she thought about her coach, Eric Bangs, sitting in the stands the last time Woodbridge won a title--it was 1991, the year Bangs took a one-year sabbatical. Before the game, Oenning went to a blackboard and wrote for her teammates to see: "Play like a champion today." And at tip-off, Oenning--the only senior starter--really got busy.
