Re "GOP: Grand old potshots," Opinion, Oct. 22 Jonah Goldberg makes two of the most wrongheaded statements in the history of column writing: He writes: "We've seen the influence of big business decline in the GOP as new populist PACs have declared war on … K Street. “The Republican Party is at war with itself,” Doyle McManus wrote in his Sunday column about how former Republican Sen. Jim DeMint is using his new post at the Heritage Foundation to push Republican members of Congress as far right as possible, fracturing the GOP. “DeMint has quickly turned Heritage -- especially its new lobbying arm, Heritage Action for America -- into a powerful engine of pressure on Republicans in Congress ...

PITTSBURGH - In a hotel conference room overlooking this city's downtown, the leaders of one of the nation's largest conservative advocacy groups outlined a plan to cripple President Obama's healthcare law. WASHINGTON -- More than 100 conservative economists will call on Congress to approve an immigration overhaul, highlighting the potential economic benefits. The letter by the American Action Forum, to be released Thursday, is the latest volley from conservative economic thinkers, who have been divided on the immigration overhaul legislation making its way through the Senate. “Immigration reform's positive impact on population growth, labor force growth, housing, and other markets will lead to more rapid economic growth,” wrote the economists, including Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the foundation's president, who is a former director of the Congressional Budget Office and a former advisor to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

WASHINGTON -- A conservative think tank said Monday that immigration reform would be costly to taxpayers -- the latest in a growing, but contradictory, body of research on the costs and benefits of providing a path to citizenship for those living in this country without legal status. The Heritage Foundation study swiftly became ammunition for Republicans who are arguing against the sweeping immigration reform measure proposed by a bipartisan group of senators. Heritage said the immigrants would become a drain on taxpayers because they would receive $6.3 trillion more in government benefits over their lifetimes than they would pay in taxes.

WASHINGTON -- Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, one of the most influential leaders of the tea party wing of the party, will retire in January to head a conservative think tank in Washington. DeMint has been a renegade on and off Capitol Hill, and earned a reputation for often rousing - and clashing - with his colleagues over his hard-line positions. The two-term senator carried those views to the campaign trail, where his political action committee endorsed right-flank candidates - often against the party's wishes.
