Santa Ana Valley baseball Coach Herschel Musick announced his resignation Friday, citing the deterioration of the school's baseball facility. Musick, who has coached in the Santa Ana Unified District for 29 years, said in a statement the Santa Ana Valley baseball field has reached the point that the school's ground crew cannot maintain its condition. Although the field is on campus, Musick said the city's parks and recreation department supervises it.

Herschel Musick said he will take over as Santa Ana Valley High School baseball coach for the third time since 1960. Musick coached at Santa Ana Valley from 1960 to 1976 and again from 1982 to 1983. He retired from coaching in 1984 but returned the following season as an assistant to Bill Ross at Santa Ana. Musick, a math teacher at Santa Ana Valley, replaces Bonifacio Contreras, who resigned at the end of the season. Musick, 56, led Santa Ana Valley to seven league championships and coached Garry Templeton (1974)

Excuse Herschel Musick if he can't recall every game, every fact and every name. But 32 years of coaching baseball--most of them at Santa Ana Valley High School--is a lot to remember. There have been many faces, many games and many memories. But through it all, Musick's love for the game has not diminished one bit. "I just enjoy coaching--working with the kids, teaching the game, seeing a team improve," Musick said. "And I've had some great teams.

Basics: District 30 Little League sponsors the clinic, open to both experienced and inexperienced youth league coaches. Fundamentals to be covered include hitting, baserunning, sliding, infield and outfield play, pitching, practice organization, safety and warmup procedures.

Santa Ana Valley Coach Herschel Musick celebrated his 300th victory after a nail biter that ended with the Falcons scoring all their runs in the seventh inning for a 5-4 Century League victory over Villa Park Wednesday at Santa Ana Valley High. Musick, who started the school's program in 1959, is 300-262-2. With one out, Robert Serrano, who pitched a complete game, drove in Freddy Macias with the winning run after hitting a long drive that bounced off the right-field fence.

Huntington Beach High will lose three coaches in boys' and girls' tennis and boys' soccer, Athletic Director Dave Van Hoorebeke said Thursday. Boys' soccer Coach Randy Chambers is retiring from coaching but will continue teaching world history, boys' tennis Coach Tom Harlow is retiring from teaching and girls' tennis Coach Lynn Monroe is leaving her walk-on position, Van Hoorebeke said. Applications are being accepted through May 6 for all three positions, which are for walk-on coaches.

Bob Glassman, who coached 11 years at Willard Intermediate School in Santa Ana, has been named to replace Bill Ross as baseball coach at Santa Ana High School. Glassman, 43, was Ross' assistant this season while continuing as athletic director at Willard. He also was an assistant for two years under Herschel Musick at Santa Ana Valley. Ross, the dean of the county's baseball coaches, resigned following the 1990 season.
