Hilary Duff might not strike most people as the first choice to play a bitter, sassy teenager with a self-destructive streak, but this ex-tween queen's attempt to transform her bright-eyed wholesomeness into rebellious snark in the modest teen saga "According to Greta" is a valiant one. Dumped by her fed-up mother (Melissa Leo) at the Jersey Shore home of Greta's grandparents (Ellen Burstyn and Michael Murphy), this movie's petulant heroine shocks those around her with acerbic musings about committing suicide at 18, until summer romance, family secrets and near-tragedy guide Greta toward an emergent maturity about the consequences of her actions.

If you killed off Lizzie McGuire's entire family and sent her to live with an evil stepmother and two stepsisters in the Valley, you'd have the basic setup for "A Cinderella Story," the banal, contemporary update of the popular fairy tale that stars Hilary Duff, best known as the Disney Channel poster girl. It's not such a grisly stretch when you consider that "Cinderella" director Mark Rosman is responsible for the 1983 horror flick and cult favorite "House on Sorority Row."

Miley Cyrus likes to spend her days playing with her dogs , skateboarding and watching television marathons of "SpongeBob SquarePants" - activities she often chronicles on Twitter. Now, the 19-year-old will have to fit a more adult activity into her schedule: wedding planning. The singer-actress announced last month that she is engaged to 22-year-old "The Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth. She becomes the latest in a line of young Hollywood stars to head for the altar, even as Americans are marrying older than they used to, and many are skipping the nuptials all together.

Rick Rofman has no sympathy for Hilary Duff because the teenager rejects a salary of $15,000 a week from Walt Disney Co. ("No Sympathy for Young 'Lizzie' Star," Letters, June 8). Mr. Rofman states that when he was a teenager working for the local library he was paid $1.11 per hour and was very happy. While I agree Ms. Duff does not deserve our sympathy, I do not cast Ms. Duff as the evil witch. What Mr. Rofman may be overlooking is that Disney, unlike his local library, has made and will make a lot of money because of Ms. Duff.

The can't-go-back-to-school-again comedy "Stay Cool" attempts to pay homage to the '80s oeuvre of filmmaker John Hughes, but its singular lack of emotional logic, charm and humor bring to mind a couple of hours in detention instead. Called back to speak to his high school's graduating class, hotshot thirtysomething author Henry (Mark Polish, who also scripted) begins reliving all the old humiliations, which amount to mostly embarrassing movie clichés: the unreachable hottie from the past (Winona Ryder, underused)

"With Love" Hilary Duff www.hilaryduff.com Hilary Duff has grown up quickly but her character exhibits a lot of class in this perfume commercial converted into a music video for her current hit. Duff roams an opulent hotel with her hopeful swain in pursuit. Must be her scent. Along the way, amid several entertaining costume changes, Duff mysteriously approaches an older man (he's gray and balding and the shot is from behind him) and gives him her hat. A coy token of her affection, perhaps?

"Raise Your Voice" -- that's the admonition that beleaguered heroine Hilary Duff struggles mightily to adhere to in the course of this teen heart-tugger. The filmmakers make a big show of striving for sincerity and substance, but they so load the dice that their movie is heavy-going from start to finish. Their best hope is to connect with teens who believe that no one seems to understand the burden they carry, and who also happen to be among Duff's fans. Pretty, eager-to-please Flagstaff, Ariz.
