Horrific accidents always divide life into before and after. But, as of late Saturday afternoon, Guillermo Navarro couldn't bear to make that demarcation for two of his children. Brian and Evelyn, hospitalized in the same room, will recover from their injuries suffered in a hit-and-run freeway crash. But Alex, 8, the oldest, lay in critical condition on life support systems. Navarro had been grappling with the sad aftermath of the Friday night crash for 20 hours.

A woman described as an elderly Latina was killed Friday morning by a hit-and-run driver. The woman, who was not identified pending notification of her family, was crossing Van Nuys Boulevard at the intersection of Kewen Avenue when she was struck by a dark green car that probably was a Saturn or Honda, police said. The LAPD has issued $25,000 rewards for information on two drivers involved in a hit-and-run accident that caused the death of 4-year-old Alejandro "Alex" Vazquez last month. The fatal incident took place at Eastern Avenue when the boy stormed out of a birthday party and ran toward his mother, who was on the opposite side of the street. Alex was hit by a car traveling north, and the impact threw the boy into the southbound lane, where he was struck by a second car.

Documentary filmmaker Michael Craven spent the last months of his life videotaping his teenage son's track meets in anticipation of a family reunion at the boy's graduation, his friends and family said. But instead of happy moments and celebration, loved ones of the 44-year-old Canoga Park man will get together in a gathering of sadness and solemnity, remembering a man who was cut short before his time. "He had so much to contribute and now won't," said his friend Scott Ross.

The problem of motorists who have been banned from driving is one that feeds upon itself in chilling and costly fashion. Point 1: Drivers whose licenses have been suspended or revoked (or who never obtained a license in the first place) subsequently commit most of the hit-and-run accidents in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Point 2: Los Angeles and surrounding communities lead the state in the frequency of hit-and-run incidents, and California leads the nation.

An epidemic of deadly hit-and-run accidents in Los Angeles ripped apart two more families Thursday--and at the same time drew hundreds of other families together. In the Westlake district west of Downtown, 7-year-old Kimberly Lopez died and her 11-year-old brother, Alan, was seriously injured after they were struck by a car while standing on a sidewalk. The accident was witnessed by dozens of children playing in a nearby schoolyard.
