A film actor whose credits include "Heathers" and "Tucker" was jailed Friday after he allegedly led authorities on a chase, crashed his sports car into a pole and fought with sheriff's deputies. Christian Slater, 20, was booked for investigation of drunk driving, hit and run, driving with a suspended license, evading arrest and assault on a peace officer, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies said. Bail was set at $3,000.

A former Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was sentenced to three years probation for driving drunk at twice the legal limit in a January 2011, hitting another car and fleeing the scene.  Michael Anthony Grundy will also have to wear an alcohol-monitoring system for two years and is required to install a breathalyzer lock on any vehicle registered under his name. Grundy, who was relieved of duty by the Sheriff's Department when the investigation began, is also barred from owning or possessing firearms. He must also pay $25,816 in restitution to the victim of the crash, who was injured.

The mother of an alleged carjacker who went on a killing rampage as he roared across the freeways of Orange County last spring was set to stand trial Tuesday in her own hit-and-run case. Sarwat Syed, 43, is accused of causing an accident that injured a mother and her two young children and fleeing the scene without offering to help the victims. The Ladera Ranch woman faces felony counts of hit-and-run driving in the 2011 accident and faces a potential maximum sentence of four years in state prison.

Rapper Chris Brown has been charged with driving without a valid license and hit-and-run, both misdemeanors, in connection with a May 21 fender bender, Los Angeles city prosecutors said Tuesday. Brown rear-ended another vehicle with his Range Rover and then failed to exchange information with the other driver, said Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney's office. Document: Read the complaint filed against Chris Brown Prosecutors say the singer did not produce a driver's license at the crash scene because he did not have a valid license at the time, and he left the scene without providing proof of insurance for his vehicle.

A 25-year-old Laguna Niguel man was convicted Wednesday of felony hit-and-run driving and of falsely claiming that his father was behind the wheel of the Porsche that struck and killed a 17-year-old bicyclist. Gary Haw was also convicted of felony conspiracy to obstruct justice, along with his father, Ronald Haw, 49, of Culver City, who was at home at the time of the accident. Gary Haw was driving his father's black Porsche in Laguna Hills last Sept.

Fighting back the tears, Wendy Ward recalled in court Friday the horror of seeing her husband struck without warning and carried on the hood of her stepmother's Mercedes-Benz before he tumbled into the street, fatally injured. Ward, 31, of Costa Mesa testified on the first day of a hearing that will determine whether to try Betty Young Davies on charges of involuntary manslaughter and felony hit-and-run driving. Davies, 58, of Newport Beach is accused of running down James R. Ward about 8 p.m.

Dutcher dispenses justice, his opponent in the November runoff election staged a bit of political theater on Thursday with a couple who said they were wronged by the judge and his politics. Prosecutor Caryl Lee, who is running against Dutcher, held a news conference to blast the judge for being soft on crime and accuse him of mishandling the case of a hit-and-run drunk driver who killed 13-year-old Jeff Martinez last August.

A high school student charged with hitting a group of children with her car will face two counts of hit-and-run driving, a prosecutor said Friday. Megan Coughran was driving to Palo Alto High School when she allegedly hit the children, one of whom died of her injuries.

Triple murder and drunk driving charges were filed against a motorist who allegedly drove over four children, killing three of them, as they played in the yard of an East San Jose home. Jose Santo Bugarin, 26, was arraigned in Santa Clara County Municipal Court on three counts of murder, three counts of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run driving.
