IT'S not so much that Gina Gershon enjoys going to funerals in Hollywood. But the veteran character actress, an indie movie stalwart perhaps best known for her tough-talking femme fatale roles in "Showgirls" and "Bound," discovered that something unusual happens when Angeleno entertainment industry-ites gather to pay respects to the dearly departed. Call it transcendence -- or perhaps what people in the biz refer to as "character development."

A funeral service for celebrated actor Mickey Rooney will be held Saturday afternoon at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, family members said. Rooney died at 93 on April 6 at the Los Angeles home of his son and daughter-in-law, leaving a legacy as one of the most enduring performers in show business. Family members in a brewing legal dispute over the body of screen legend Mickey Rooney have reached an agreement on where and how the star should be buried, heading off a potentially costly and public court fight, attorneys announced Thursday afternoon. The agreement comes on the eve of a court hearing scheduled for Friday morning, at which a judge was to hear arguments from an attorney for Rooney's estranged wife on one side, and Rooney's conservator, who has the support of his stepson Mark Rooney and daughter-in-law, on the other.

It's the staging, not the material, that's challenging in Circle X's rich new holiday confection, "Marley's Ghost." Jeff Goode's play is a smart, engaging prequel to "A Christmas Carol" that stirs in some wicked whimsy a la Lewis Carroll but ultimately conveys the same inspirational message of hope and forgiveness as the original. Less forgiving is director Matthew Bretz's ambitious roving production on the grounds of Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

MUSIC Though somewhat lost in the recent pop cultural rise of Zooey Deschanel and her folk-pop side-project She & Him, the "him" of that equation, M. Ward, has long been a notable singer-songwriter in his own right. Also part of the indie semi-supergroup Monsters of Folk, Ward performs in advance of the spring release of "A Wasteland Companion," his first new album since 2009. Though this show will provide ample showcase for Ward's uniquely intricate, raspy-voiced storytelling, odds are "She" could swing by and join in as well.

Cemeteries have always intrigued me, since the time as a young boy when I ran across a freshly dug grave, two teenagers at the bottom of the pit, doing the things teenagers do when they get a little privacy. Since then, I always found cemeteries a little sexy. As kids, we always romped through the nearby graveyard as respectfully as a bunch of 10-year-olds could, chasing rabbits amid the tombstones, playing hide-and-seek. Always thought the spirits probably enjoyed our company, as much as we enjoyed the Huckleberry freedoms that a leafy old cemetery can offer.

British electro-rock pioneer Gary Numan got an unexpected welcome when he moved from England to Los Angeles last year. Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor, who calls Numan a crucial early influence, wrote a personal testimonial for his immigration application, and soon welcomed Numan into NIN's larger musical circle. "I had been here only a week and he got in touch and invited us over and introduced me to all of his friends, all kinds of really cool people, and gave me a social life immediately," Numan says of Reznor's welcome upon his family's arrival.

They stood. When the screen went to black, behind the haunting play-out of antihero extraordinaire Walter White against Badfinger's "Baby Blue," the crowd at the screening of Sunday's series finale of "Breaking Bad" at Hollywood Forever Cemetery wrestled out from their lawn chairs and blankets en masse. They clapped, they whistled, they hooted, they hollered, they cried, they took deep breaths. And they stood. A standing ovation for their show. "It was perfect," said Stefanie Turner, from Phoenix, with teary eyes.

Summer in Los Angeles is the best time for outdoor movies, and Cinespia sure knows how to put on a show. Photographer Anson Chu shot this photo at a recent screening of "Back to the Future" at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where Chu guessed there were 10 or more DeLoreans in attendance. This being Chu's first time watching a film at the cemetery, he is now eager to go back. Not attending an outdoor movie screening would "feel like an L.A. summer somewhat squandered," wrote Chu in an email.
