Seven years ago, members of the Ward African Methodist Episcopal Church near the USC campus decided to do something about the growing number of black children abandoned by their parents to foster homes and group care agencies. They created "Room for One More," a program designed to encourage black couples and individuals to adopt black children and give them a loving home. So far, Ward A.M.E. parishioners have adopted five children, church officials said.

Many congregations in Southern California will reach across denominational lines next week to celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving--often at services calling attention to ongoing food programs for the needy. The Arcadia interfaith Thanksgiving service Tuesday night, for example, is sponsored by 14 churches and synagogues of the Arcadia Interfaith Action Group, which formed in response to the 1992 Los Angeles riots. People attending that service, at 7 p.m.

"The typhoon hit here," says Pinky Santos, pointing to the map in gold thread on her blue polo shirt. "My family is here," she adds, moving her finger north. For many Filipinos, it's been a somber month of sharing links to donation websites on social media and organizing aid trips to affected areas.
