The Angels' offensive drought had reached such epic proportions this week that hitters repeatedly brought their irritation back to the bench, a habit that Manager Mike Scioscia addressed Thursday in Chicago during a postgame meeting. There were nothing but high-fives and smiles in the dugout in the 10th inning Friday at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum after light-hitting Erick Aybar smoked a leadoff homer to lift the Angels to a 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Aybar's homer, which cleared the right-field wall on a 2-and-0 pitch from reliever Andrew Bailey, ended the Angels' four-game losing streak and momentarily softened the blow of division rival Texas' acquisition of Seattle ace Cliff Lee earlier in the day. "He has some pop in that little body of his," Angels center fielder Torii Hunter said of Aybar, whose homer was his third of the season.

It had been so long since he'd said so long , Keyaan Cook needed a refresher course in the lost art of the long ball. The Cal State Northridge second baseman hit seven homers last year, but hadn't muscled one out in the first 19 games this season. An hour before his mates showed for their Western Athletic Conference opener against Hawaii, Cook took extra batting practice in an attempt to regain his power stroke. "I was trying to get the feel of hitting one out," he said.

Ryan Sweeney retreated, leaped and stuck his glove above the eight-foot wall -- and saved a win for the Oakland Athletics. Sweeney's incredible catch in straightaway center robbed Ian Kinsler of a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the A's held on, winning 4-2 over the Texas Rangers on Thursday. "It was pretty much timing," Sweeney said. "I just jumped, got lucky and caught it. He hit it dead center. I think if he would have pulled it a little bit, it might have gone."

It was an 85-mph slider, and Juan Rivera was able to track the path of the pitch just fine. The left fielder who recently sat out six consecutive games because of blurry vision hammered the offering from Seattle reliever Brian Sweeney for a seventh-inning solo homer Saturday night at Angel Stadium, lifting the Angels to a 7-6 victory. Rivera had three hits, finishing a triple short of the cycle, on a night that the Angels can only hope portends a better second half for a player who hit a disappointing .240 with 11 homers and 35 runs batted in before the All-Star break.

Prince Fielder hit a solo homer with one out in the 12th inning and the Milwaukee Brewers, helped by a triple play, beat the San Francisco Giants, 2-1, on Sunday. With Randy Winn on second and Ryan Garko on first in the sixth inning, Aaron Rowand hit a grounder that third baseman Casey McGehee fielded right on the bag. McGehee touched third and threw to second baseman Felipe Lopez for a force, and Lopez's relay to Fielder completed the Brewers' first triple play in 10 years.
