Being openly homosexual in this southern African country is considered such a disgrace that Tina Machida's parents had her raped to prove that she was capable of being with a man. Machida, then 18, got pregnant, but she refused to go along with the rest of the plan. Not only would she not marry the man, she ran off with a female lover and got an abortion.

How tragic that the front-page story of The Times on the persecution of homosexuals in Zimbabwe (July 27) is matched by a full-page ad promoting that same persecution in America. If the group Exodus had run a full-page ad encouraging the conversion of Jews or war on interracial relationships, would The Times have accepted it? This ad would be laughable, including all of its ridiculous commentary on the heavy price Christians have paid for hating homosexuals, except that Trent Lott is the Senate majority leader and Reggie White is a voice that is heard, and that at least 850 homosexuals were filled with enough internalized homophobia and self-hatred to join groups like Exodus.
