A Mexican businessman has been sentenced to three months in jail and fined $25,000 for transporting hazardous waste from the San Fernando Valley to Mexico--the first conviction involving an international border under a 1985 California toxic waste law, prosecutors said Wednesday. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lance Ito sentenced Horacio Sosa, 55, Tuesday under a plea agreement made with the district attorney's office.

A Sherman Oaks businessman has been freed on $40,000 bail after appearing in court on felony charges that he transported hazardous waste from the San Fernando Valley to Mexico, authorities said Friday. Soleiman Motamed, 53, owner of Triple S. Chemical Products Inc. in Los Angeles, was accused of illegally shipping dozens of drums of lethal cyanide to Mexico, where they were found stored in abandoned warehouses and behind open businesses, Deputy Dist. Atty. William Carter said.

An El Toro man pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to smuggling toxic waste from Los Angeles County to Mexico for illegal dumping, prosecutors said. U.S. Atty. Lourdes Baird said prosecution of Raymond Franco, 58, represents the first federal indictment and conviction under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, an environmental statute that prohibits unlawful transportation and disposal of hazardous waste.
