Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa spoke publicly for the first time Monday about the breakup of his 20-year marriage, saying he was responsible for the split even as he refused to talk about what caused it. In a somber meeting with reporters at City Hall, Villaraigosa declined to answer questions about whether the break with his wife, Corina, was triggered by another romantic relationship.

The NFL will celebrate its 50th Super Bowl in Northern California, where its newest, most high-tech venue is being built. That makes South Florida, in the midst of a spat over expensive stadium renovations, a loser for the 2016 game. And Miami took a double defeat when Houston was awarded the 2017 championship game. In separate votes, NFL owners Tuesday went with the San Francisco Bay Area and Houston on the first ballot at their spring meetings. The 49ers' new home is set to open next year in Santa Clara and will host the first Super Bowl in the area since 1985.

Ann Curry has had many defenders in her recent battle with NBC and “Today,” whose co-host chair she was, of course, forced to vacate. But the TV personality doesn't win any sympathy from one prominent former"Today"figure. Bryant Gumbel, the broadcaster who presided over the morning program for 15 years, said he feels Curry has received overly favorable treatment. Curry's ouster, Gumbel believes, was a simple matter of ratings, and he wonders why so many observers and commentators have rallied so vocally to her defense.

Cable news anchors yell at guests all the time. Guys like Bill O'Reilly, Chris Matthews and Lawrence O'Donnell lose their cool on a regular basis. But there's something about the clip of MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry yelling at guest financial expert Monica Mehta on a program on Saturday that's touching a nerve with viewers. The context was a panel discussion touched off by the book "Why Americans Hate Welfare" by Princeton professor Martin Gilens. In the book, Gilens asserts that the public distaste for welfare is a direct offshoot of the 20-year-old efforts of the media to link welfare to black people.

For the second time in less than three years, NBC's ratings woes have led to the unceremonious dumping of a prominent on-air host, this time "Today's" Ann Curry. On Thursday, the 55-year-old newswoman tearfully said goodbye to viewers with her co-host Matt Lauer, who will remain on the show, at her side. "For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line, but, man, I did try," Curry said in a wavering voice as she marked her last day atop TV's No. 1 morning news show.

Beleaguered Oscar host Seth MacFarlane made no secret leading up to the show that this year's gig was a one-and-done proposition. So Tuesday's tweet to a follower's inquiry about a return engagement -- "No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though" -- wasn't a surprise. If anything, it could be seen either as MacFarlane's way of washing his hands of the Academy and its deadly serious awards show or reassuring haters that they wouldn't have him to kick around anymore. “Do me a favor and don't read the press tomorrow,” MacFarlane told guests at a West Hollywood after-party following the show.

Roger Ebert's  last review published before he died Thursday was on Andrew Niccol's "The Host. " It makes you wish the final words of the beloved critic could have been spent on a film that was far better -- or far worse. The 70-year-old critic wrote a mere six paragraphs about the adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer bestseller, giving the film 2 1/2 stars. "The Host" centers on a tough-minded teenager, played by Saoirse Ronan, whose body is invaded by an alien soul, yet she retains her own identity.

Six men and two women sit down to a simple dinner around a rectangular table in a glassed-in upstairs room at Osteria la Buca. It's 7:30 on a Tuesday night in spring, and the sun is just barely sinking into the city haze, leaving Melrose Avenue awash in dirty pink and gold light. The guests - all strangers - have arrived to take part in a new dinner series called the Salon at Osteria la Buca. They have been picked by the restaurant to participate based upon recommendations from previous guests and RSVP letters they composed outlining their professional accomplishments and personal philosophies.

This is the sixth time they have met in the playoffs. The two times the Ducks defeated Detroit in the playoffs (2003 and 2007) were also the two times they reached the Stanley Cup Final, winning in 2007. Anaheim was 1-2 against the Red Wings in this shortened season, losing both games at home, getting outscored 7-2. The Ducks' win at Detroit on Feb. 15 was a breakthrough moment of sorts, marking their first win at Joe Louis Arena in five years. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard has a career record of 9-3-1 against the Ducks.

A couple of years ago, Don Mattingly became aware of the challenges faced by kids in low-income communities in Los Angeles who want to play baseball. “Some of their biggest issues was that kids don't have gloves,” Mattingly said. “They don't have bats and balls and tees. I was like, 'Really?' That seems crazy.” The Dodgers manager is trying to do something about it. He will host a fundraising event at the Sports Museum of Los Angeles on Thursday night that will be headlined by George Lopez.
