A two-night rampage at a state prison ended Friday with a guard and two inmates seriously wounded, five hostages freed and much of the overcrowded institution destroyed or damaged by fire, authorities said. There were no deaths or escapes, officials said, but more than 100 people were injured in the battle to take back the medium-security prison. Police officers firing guns and tear gas stormed a kitchen building as they began taking back control of the prison Friday morning, officials said.

Dennis Czajkowski, 40, is accused of bursting into Pennsylvania's largest mental hospital, firing several shots and taking captive two nursing supervisors who had played a role in his dismissal in April, state police said.

At least 79 people have been injured in the two days of disturbances. A man asked to see a shotgun at a Kmart store Thursday, then loaded the weapon and used it to hold 25 people hostage before surrendering more than five hours later, authorities said. No one was hurt. The man, identified by police as Larry Eugene Fry of Carlisle, Pa., released the hostages before walking out of the store unarmed. State Trooper Karen Dutrow said a domestic dispute may have triggered the incident.
