TEMPE, Ariz. -- Angels slugger Kendrys Morales hit a home run and a single in three at-bats in Thursday's 11-8 exhibition victory over the Kansas City Royals to improve his spring average to .625 (10 for 16) and fuel more optimism the switch-hitter will claim an every-day designated hitter job after missing 1 1/2 seasons because of a broken left ankle. That would seem to reduce playing time for Mark Trumbo, who led the team with 29 homers and 87 runs batted in last season, but it appears Trumbo will make up for the loss of DH at-bats by playing more third base.

PHOENIX -- Non-roster catcher Eliezer Alfonzo won't be in the Dodgers' major-league camp this spring, as he remains in his native Venezuela infected with dengue virus. Alfonzo, who is on a minor league contract, was given permission to report late to camp so he could tend to a family matter. While in Venezuela, he contracted the virus. If or when Alfonzo reports to the Dodgers' spring-training complex, he will be in the minor-league camp. Alfonzo's place in the major-league camp will be taken by catcher Matt Wallach, son of third base coach Tim Wallach.

PHOENIX -- For the Dodgers, third base represents uncertainty. It is the only position where they don't have a clear-cut starter. Luis Cruz senses an opportunity. Juan Uribe is seeking redemption. The Mexican-born Cruz had a fairy tale 2012 season. A career minor league player whose big league experience consisted of brief stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers, he was called up by the Dodgers on July 2. Cruz played shortstop until the Dodgers moved him to third base to accommodate Hanley Ramirez, whom they acquired in a trade with the Miami Marlins.

Andy LaRoche went to spring training in 2005 sure he wouldn't be the Dodgers' starting third baseman that season. "We just signed Bill Mueller to a two-year contract," he said, "so I was going in thinking, 'I don't really have a chance of making it because we just got an ex-batting champion.' " A year ago, Wilson Betemit had the edge when camp began.
