Reality TV star and singer Heidi Montag has been hiding out by the beach this summer at a Malibu place she rented for $25,000 a month, according to the Multiple Listing Service. But she moved on in late August, and the gated contemporary is back on the market at $5.5 million. Yes, that's Heidi of "The Hills," as in Heidi and Spencer, as in soon-to-be divorced Heidi. Lost? A gated Mediterranean owned by actor Pierce Brosnan, who was the fifth James Bond in the long-running film series, has come on the market in Malibu at $3.9 million. Designed as an artist's retreat, the two-story beach house includes a separate space that can be used as an office or media room. The living room has high wood-beam ceilings, walls of glass, a fireplace, plank oak floors, built-in cabinetry and two balconies with ocean and mountain views. It doesn't take much scratching beneath the surface to find a celebrity name in a home's title history or the public record in L.A. County. Among recent listings with celebrity pedigrees are: -- An Italian-style villa in La Canada Flintridge built in 1989 by actor Kevin Costner with his then-wife, Cindy. The walled compound has 6,754 square feet of living space in the main house, 2,400 square feet of loggias and a detached 840-square-foot structure with a 1,000-bottle wine cellar, tasting room, office and bathroom.

Moby, as DJ and singer-songwriter Richard Melville Hall is known, has purchased Wolf's Lair, a Hollywood Hills castle-like fortress with views of downtown, Griffith Park, the Hollywood sign and the ocean, for $3.925 million. The sellers are Lionsgate Entertainment's Jay Faires and Debbie Matenopoulos, former co-host of "The View" (1997-99). Wolf's Lair was built in 1927 by Hollywoodland developer L. Milton Wolf. Moby, who will be moving from the East Coast, plans to restore the property in keeping with its period charm.

Marc Holland, chief executive of Sky Radio, has listed a four-unit beachfront property in Marina del Rey at $3,999,000. The income property, built in 1968, has been redesigned as a contemporary live/work space with a total of 4,500 square feet. The units have ocean views, Viking appliances, fireplaces and bamboo floors. There is a three-bedroom, three-bathroom penthouse, plus a two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit and two studios. Holland, who was using the property for vacation rentals, launched his in-flight entertainment business in 1995.

The '80s are over, aren't they? We are evolving into a society marked by an enhanced concern for the environment and a renewed commitment to the values of thrift and prudence, aren't we? Yet the Real Estate section persists in dragging us back to the days of greed and excess in its weekly feature, "Hot Property." Vidal Sassoon, the stylist turned magnate whose name became synonymous with hair care products, has sold his Midcentury Modern landmark in Beverly Hills for $10 million. Designed by Hal Levitt, the 1962 house features walls of glass, high ceilings and city-to-ocean views. Sitting behind gates at the end of a long driveway, the home has an acre and a half of grounds including a swimming pool and a guest house. There are five bedrooms and seven bathrooms in nearly 6,200 square feet of living space.
