The Irvine Co. is negotiating with the Hyatt Corp. hotel chain to build and operate a second plush hotel on the Irvine Coast, the three-mile stretch of wind-swept shoreline between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach that the big landowner is developing as a resort. The company has already signed one deal with Marriott Corp. to operate an 1,100-room hotel overlooking the ocean and part of a golf course. It will be one of the largest hotels on the California coast when it opens around 1993.

I recently stumbled onto a report I dubbed "Hotel Confidential: What Innkeepers Won't Tell You About Pricing." The report, in reality titled "Hotel Revenue Management in an Economic Downturn: Results of an International Study," released this month by the prestigious Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, coaches hotel owners on how to weather the recession and keep most of us paying the highest room prices possible. For travelers, reading it is like sneaking behind enemy lines.

Rank Hotels is repeating a winter promotion in which the price of rooms calculated in pounds at five hotels in London will be offered for the same figure in dollars, from Dec. 15 through Feb. 29. Thus, a room normally costing 130 would cost $130. At the recent exchange rate of $1.78 per pound, that means a savings of about 43% from the regular rate of about $230 per night. Bookings must be made at least 14 days prior to arrival, and there is a minimum two-night stay requirement.

The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa sounds religious but it's not. The upscale resort near Cape Town, South Africa, derives its name from the nearby mountain range. The mountains stand on one side of the resort; the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Guests can watch whales and dolphins in the ocean and hike the surrounding wilderness trails of Table Mountain National Park. The deal: Cape Town Chic is a well-priced package from Lion World Tours that includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles, a day in Cape Town on your own and four nights at the Twelve Apostles to enjoy the setting and the spa. Spend a little more and you can add on sightseeing excursions.

In Northern California's Humboldt County, home to Eureka, some hotels are promising free accommodations to guests stranded in January or February by storm-caused road closures or flight cancellations.
