As the all-important holiday munching season looms, Castle & Cooke said Wednesday it has sold its House of Almonds subsidiary to Spinner Corp. for an undisclosed price. House of Almonds, which operates 106 company-owned stores and 139 franchised candy and nut stores under the House of Almonds and Morrow's names, had sales of about $40 million last year. Los Angeles-based Castle & Cooke has two main businesses: Dole Food Co.

Bakersfield-based House of Almonds, a small chain of nut and candy stores, on Friday bought San Dimas-based Betty Zane Corp., which operates the much larger Morrow's Nut House chain. House of Almonds, a unit of Tenneco West, the nation's largest independent handler and processor of dried fruits and nuts, didn't disclose the terms of the transaction. The acquisition includes four distribution centers around the country and a confectionary production plant near San Dimas.

An 18-year-old Santa Ana man who was shot near the House of Almonds in South Coast Plaza on Sunday was in stable condition Monday, police said. The victim, identified as Shawn Paine, was wounded once in the stomach about 4 p.m., said Police Lt. Leslie Harrison. He said a 15-year-old Santa Ana boy was arrested moments later on suspicion of attempted murder. An argument broke out between the suspect and victim inside the McDonald's restaurant near the Sears, Roebuck store, Harrison said.

Capping a dramatic recovery from near bankruptcy barely two years ago, Castle & Cooke said Wednesday that it has agreed to buy most of the California farming operations of Houston-based Tenneco for $220 million cash and $16 million in assumed debt. Securities analysts welcomed the news as beneficial for both companies.

Managers of San Fernando Valley-area malls agree that shoppers who hope to avoid large-scale crowds should venture out during the weekday, preferably the beginning of the week in the early morning, after the lunch-hour rush between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m., or the late evening.
