A former boot salesman, U.S. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon knows the importance of a good fit. The Santa Clarita Republican is seeking his fourth term, and for the first time, faces no major party opposition. The reason: "I fit the district very well," McKeon said. "It's a very conservative district, and I'm conservative." Of course there are other reasons Democratic challengers have kept away, including the power of incumbency and money.

Calling it an "extremely serious matter," Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon asked Thursday for a federal investigation into allegations that petition gatherers were barred from collecting signatures at Van Nuys Airport last weekend. In a letter to U.S. Atty. Nora Manella, McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) said he is concerned that airport officials violated the federal rights of volunteers for Valley Voters Organized Toward Empowerment.

In an attempt to salvage the Santa Clara River's chance of being named an American Heritage River, the City Council will ask Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) to rescind his opposition to the initiative. The council voted 4 to 1 Tuesday to ask McKeon to reconsider his position and said it will seek the support of U.S. Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer to lobby President Clinton on behalf of the river.

A federal panel Tuesday declined to include the Santa Clara River on its list of finalists for the American Heritage River designation and a local environmental group blamed Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon for the exclusion. In a June 3 letter to the federal Council on Environmental Quality, McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) requested that the Los Angeles County portion of the river be excluded from the initiative.

A controversy over road-building plans in Santa Clarita has generated an angry exchange of correspondence between U.S. Rep. Howard P.
