The fascination of watching Howie Mandel in action is in seeing how a desperately unfunny man can be deliriously received, as was the case in his appearance before a sellout crowd at the Universal Amphitheatre over the weekend. With lines like "Last night I slept like a baby.

The hot priests calendar. In Rome, that's what they call the Calendario Romano. Its pages are filled with good-looking young men in clerical garb, posing for the camera. Yes, they're actual priests, photographer Piero Pazzi told the Los Angeles Times, or "seminarians or accoliti . " (See the gallery, above.) Roman news outlet the Local says tourists can be seen at gift stands near the Vatican eyeballing the calendar, then snapping it up . PHOTOS: Meet the Nice Jewish Guys Pazzi told the Los Angeles Times that the calendar , which he's put out since 2003, consists of portraits of men he photographed in the streets of Rome and Seville, Spain.

No more Mr. Nice Judge. Last week on "America's Got Talent," as the live shows kicked off, new judge Howard Stern proved two things: 1) He can still be combative and even cruel when he wants to be. 2) He is a very good arbiter of talent and predictor of America's tastes. Stern proved that again Tuesday night, when the show clicked into its new Tuesday/Wednesday schedule, going toe-to-toe with fellow judge Howie Mandel over a truly talent-free contestant who, just as Stern said, should never have made it through to the quarterfinals, depriving worthier contenders of a slot.

Howie Mandel has said he has the attention span of a gnat. He's right. On a recent languid afternoon, Mandel was sitting behind the desk of his sterile office at Film Roman, the company that produces Mandel's Saturday morning kids' series, "Bobby's World." He was discussing his latest comedy special "Howie Mandel: Howie Spent Our Summer," premiering Saturday on Showtime. Suddenly, he grabbed a book on how to make small wooden boxes off his desk and stuck it in front of his visitor's face.

When Howie Mandel performs on New Year's Eve at the Celebrity Theatre in Anaheim, he'll be breaking new ground for his Southern California fans. Certainly the 31 costume changes and the typically unpredictable antics are impressive in themselves, but Mandel is going the full Cleveland for this show. "It will feature four things done with cheese that have never been seen before," Mandel, 38, promised in a recent phone interview from his home in the L.A. hills.

Comic Howie Mandel, host of "Deal or No Deal," the NBC game show that has taken America by storm, thought he knew what made people tick. Based on his famous (or infamous?) candid-camera stunts, he concluded that most people don't follow their first instincts.

After the rip-roaring, talent-packed first set of the "America's Got Talent" semifinals last week, you might have expected this week's follow-up - the final 12 contenders for next week's finals -- to feel like the dregs. But I'll be darned if this second batch wasn't as just good -- in some cases, perhaps better - than last week's. At one point, Howie Mandel was moved to exclaim, "This show is exploding!" and then to declare, "This is the best semifinals ever in the history of 'America's Got Talent.'" Which is not to say there weren't a few relative clunkers.

"The wild-card show is all about redemption," Howie Mandel told us at the outset of Tuesday night's "America's Got Talent. " And most of the 12 acts brought back by Mandel and fellow judges Sharon Osbourne and Howard Stern (each got four picks) did manage to return from elimination to redeem themselves, dutifully heeding Stern's stern advice: "Don't blow it. " Of course, only four acts will make it through to the semifinals, and on an evening that was solid if not quite as "spectacular" as the judges kept telling us it was, it's not crystal clear which performers will advance.

"America's Got Talent"kicked off its last batch of quarterfinal performances Tuesday night with what sounded like the usual preshow hyperbole. "I believe this could be our best show yet," Howard Stern said. "This lineup is stronger than any lineup before," Howie Mandel noted. "Every single act is a winner," Sharon Osbourne agreed. Turned out, the judges weren't exaggerating. Nor were they whistling Dixie when they said, again and again, what tough luck it was for the acts who performed this week because they were competing in such a stellar mix of contestants.
