Cornerback LeRoy Irvin returned to the Ram starting lineup after a celebrated absence that included assorted injuries, illnesses, holdouts and trade demands. By most accounts, including his own, the return was a success. "I thought I did OK," he said. "I knew a lot of guys were going to be watching me. I did the best that I could." Irvin said he considered Sunday's game against the Cardinals "my season opener." "The first part, my mind wasn't into playing football," he said.

Bill Bain, trying to practice while hurt, was ordered off the Rams' field Thursday. "Go see the trainer and get yourself straightened out," said Hudson Houck, offensive line coach Hudson Houck. Apparently, Bain was not having a good day. "I think his wrist is really bothering him," Houck said. "He can't lock out (lock his arms on pass protection). He's just getting worn down. We're asking him to practice a lot and play the whole game every week."

Ram center Doug Smith received what was described as "a bruise on the brain" at New Orleans last Sunday and may not play against the 49ers in San Francisco Monday night. "This was a little more than a Grade One concussion," trainer Jim Anderson said Thursday. Smith, a Pro Bowl selection last season, was injured in the first quarter. "He'll practice tomorrow, and the doctors will re-test him," offensive line coach Hudson Houck said. "But we're not sure he's going to start.

Offensive lineman Gerald Perry went through his first workouts with the Rams on Tuesday and was impressive in a one-on-one drill against rookie pass-rush specialist Robert Young. "It's obvious he's a good player like we thought," offensive line coach Hudson Houck said. "He's a little out of shape, obviously, as we thought would be the case."

Bill Bain, who received some All-Pro recognition last season, has been replaced by Irv Pankey at left offensive tackle for the Rams--and Bain endorsed the move Wednesday. "It's a smart thing the coaches have done because I really haven't displayed that I can play without getting hurt, (and) Pankey's playing super," he said. Coach John Robinson started Pankey last Sunday to see how he would do against Leonard Marshall, the New York Giants' National Football League sack leader.
