David J. Gustin has been appointed president of Hunt-Wesson Grocery Products Co. He succeeds Albert J. Crosson, who has served as president for a year. Gustin, 44, has been with Hunt-Wesson for two years, first as president of the Orville Redenbacher-Swiss Miss Foods subsidiary. Last year he was also appointed president of the La Choy-Rosarita Foods unit. Crosson, 64, has been president and chief operating officer of ConAgra Grocery Products Co. since 1986.

Hunt-Wesson Inc.'s shuttered tomato processing plant in Fullerton, a vestige of the once-flourishing canning industry in Southern California, will be sold to Lincoln Property Co. of Texas, city officials said Wednesday. In one of the largest deals reported in North County's manufacturing base in recent years, Lincoln plans to acquire the site's three structures--totaling about 750,000 square feet--and construct five more industrial buildings.

On Thursday, Hunt-Wesson and Imperial Chemical Industries in London signed an agreement calling for the Fullerton tomato-processing giant to finance a multi-year effort by ICI's U.S. research arm in Wilmington, Del., to create a super tomato.

A locally based company has adopted more than two days of disaster relief from the Red Cross. Food processor Hunt-Wesson Inc. has donated more than $6,000 to the Red Cross as part of the agency's "Adopt-a-Day of Disaster Relief Program." "We can all feel more secure knowing the Red Cross is ready and able to respond in times of urgent need," Kay Carpenter, a spokeswoman for Hunt-Wesson, said in a news release.

Companies around the country are increasingly incorporating "fire-at-will" clauses in their employment policies, allowing for termination of non-union employees without cause. A common management practice for years, this policy fell from favor in the '80s, when courts began to support the rights of employees in many wrongful-discharge cases. Recently, however, companies have begun reinstituting these clauses in employment applications and other general policy documents.

Armed with about 1,300 signatures in opposition to a planned flour mill in West Fullerton, residents will ask the City Council tonight to overturn the project. The city's Planning Commission last month approved the mill proposed by Hunt-Wesson's parent company, ConAgra Inc. of Omaha, Neb. Residents filed an appeal to the City Council, contending dust from the mill would pose health hazards.

Legacy Partners, formerly the Lincoln Property Co., has begun building a major industrial project for about $30 million on the former Hunt-Wesson Inc. site in Fullerton. The speculative project, called Fullerton Crossroads, will be marketed to mid-to-large industrial users, such as manufacturers and distributors, said Michael Merk of Grubb & Ellis. Merk and Shawn Kelter are leasing agents for the project.
