HUNTING FUROR: First there was the prairie dog shoot last July, and now there is the coyote shoot. Colorado House Minority Leader Ruth Wright would like to put a stop to it all. During this first week of the 1991 session, Wright plans to introduce a bill that would prohibit animal-killing contests. But the bill, which would still allow trophy contests during hunting season, could not take effect in time to block the coyote hunting contest planned for Saturday.

Public response has been "phenomenal" to a trust fund recently established to help the family of Diane Lightfoot, whose husband was killed while hunting in Colorado, her lawyer, Randall Hite, said. Lightfoot, mother of seven and a resident of Garden Grove, was astounded when someone anonymously donated $2,000 to the fund via the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Cypress. "I was very surprised; I didn't expect it," she said, "I really would like to thank everyone for their support."

Bobby Knoop played next to Jim Fregosi for five years. They were more than just the keystone components of a slick double-play combination, though. They were roommates during the season and hunting and fishing partners in the off-season. Ask Knoop, now the Angel first base coach, how he remembers Fregosi and he'll tell you about sail fishing in Mexico or deer hunting in Colorado. But then he says, "Of course, I'll always think of Jimmy as a player." Fregosi, who played shortstop for the Angels from 1961 to 1971 and managed the team from June of 1978 through May of 1981, was inducted into the Angel hall of fame Wednesday night.

Four years ago, when SMU's Mustangs were beginning yet another probationary period and blaming Texas for turning them in, bumper stickers began appearing on the cars in the SMU student-parking lots, which closely resemble the parking lots around Rodeo Drive, that said, "My Maid Went to Texas."
