The sun was still low as Paul Sebourn and three companions, including his 12-year-old grandson, Brandon, fanned out into the field. As three white and gold Brittany spaniels ran yelping in several directions, the hunters sauntered cautiously through the brush with shotguns slung over their shoulders. Suddenly one of the dogs stopped short, pointing like a frozen statue at a bush. A few seconds passed as the hunters cautiously brought their guns to the ready.

Rep. Ron Packard, a member of the powerful House aviation subcommittee, vowed Wednesday to fight three sites soon to be recommended by an Orange County citizens' panel as potential locations for a new regional airport. In an apparent preemptive move, Packard (R-Carlsbad) hosted a meeting of several local congressmen in Washington, during which they agreed to draft broad guidelines for the location of any future airport.

Jim and Tammy Bakker, deposed leaders of the evangelistic PTL organization, are shopping for a home in Newport Beach, a real estate saleswoman confirmed Tuesday. "I showed them a home in Corona del Mar on Friday night," said Lyleen Ewing, of Coldwell Bankers Residential Real Estate in Newport Beach. Ewing said the Bakkers, who are now renting a home in Malibu, apparently looked at just one place in Newport Beach--a home for about $600,000 on Topside Lane.

In 1950, the Associated Press conducted a poll of sportswriters and sports broadcasters, trying to determine who was the greatest athlete of the first half-century. The runaway winner: Jim Thorpe. He died at 64 on this date 46 years ago, stricken by a heart attack while having dinner in his small trailer on Pacific Coast Highway in Lomita. The range of his athletic achievements remain unmatched, even by modern standards of two-sport athletes such as Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders.

Where was this deal 18 months ago? If the Walt Disney Co. would have been willing to sell the Angels back then for less than $200 million -- or even a little more -- John Henry would own the defending World Series champions right now, not the Boston Red Sox. On Thursday, Arte Moreno bought the Angels for $183.5 million. When Henry offered to buy the Angels, Disney insisted on $250 million.

Are you frustrated? Confused? Not sure who to trust? Do you feel inferior and unworthy of full membership in society? Do you wonder what all your hard work has accomplished and whether you're on the right track in life? Worst of all, are your personal failings so obvious to you that you recount them late at night as you're trying to fall asleep? If so, you've probably been house hunting in Orange County. Had pioneers confronted this market, the country never would have been settled.
