Atlanta Falcon Tony Gonzalez, arguably the best tight end in football, and his wife, October, have listed their Manhattan Beach house for sale at $3.6 million. Should the NFL player sell for full price, he's promised to include a nice accessory in the four-car garage: a new Porsche 911 Cabriolet. The Spanish-style beach house, built in 1983, is two blocks from the sand. Its 1,700-square-foot rooftop deck, with views from Malibu to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, is one of its best features, Gonzalez said.

Alex Lopez is as devoted to his Fountain Valley high school as he is to Christianity, and the chance to meld the two for posterity seemed a perfect way to cap off his senior year. So he and a dozen friends lined up in the front row during a senior class yearbook photo session with their T-shirts spelling out "Jesus is the way" and "Jesus {heart} U," with a cross on each side.

For a slice of the future for many California cities, look to this beach city and listen above the clacking of the skateboards to a shirtless, whippet-thin high school senior with nipple rings and a puka shell necklace: "Big air! They're all going for big air, big grind, big slash," said Jesse Brunell, watching a young man in drooping camouflage pants execute a midair pirouette. "It's a way of life for just about everyone here. We're into what I call expressive adrenaline."

It was a week in which Alison Arvizu was caught in the fast lane. Arvizu, 16, spent six days competing in a top junior tennis tournament in Southern California. That wasn't enough pressure, however. Before hitting the courts each afternoon, she competed for Huntington Beach High in the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. championships.

High school sports serve as a rite of passage for the athletes who play them, the students, friends and families that gather to watch them and the sportswriters who cut their professional teeth covering them. High school football games in Los Angeles date to 1896, but it wasn't until 1934 that the Los Angeles City Section was born. The Southern Section was established in 1912 and held its first athletic competition in 1913.

When Dawn Mirone's government class at Laguna Beach High School begins verbal reports this morning, the talk of politics and partisanship will include a few familiar names: Bill, Monica, Linda and Ken. Since school started last week, the sex scandal involving President Clinton has been the social studies teacher's hook to excite students about the Constitution, political parties, congressional committees and impeachment proceedings. Never before have the headlines so livened up her lesson plans.

Seven teen-age surfers from Huntington Beach High School's championship surf team will leave Orange County on Wednesday for more than two weeks of competition in Australia. Coach Andy Verdone arranged the trip after Principal Jim Staunton received district approval allowing the students two weeks' leave. They are scheduled to return Jan. 17. "This is the first time a surf team I've coached has ever been allowed to travel on school time," said Verdone, who has been coach for six years.

Huntington Beach won its second consecutive Southern Section boys' volleyball championship Saturday with a 15-13, 11-15, 15-8, 15-9 victory over Laguna Beach in the Division I final at Cerritos College. The unseeded Oilers (21-2) avenged a nonleague loss to Laguna Beach on May 2. Last season, Huntington Beach defeated Capistrano Valley in five games in the Division I championship match. Dan Styles had 28 kills for Laguna Beach (19-2), but the Oilers' defense made the difference.

Inside the TV control room, the 16-year-old program director, Paul Lear, spoke into his headset. "OK, quiet on the set. Coming up on Camera 1, then cut to 2." In the adjoining TV studio, the camera crew and on-camera talent tried not to show fatigue or irritation. The slate man held up a card that read: "Take No. 17." A young woman quickly glanced at her cue card. The red light on Camera 1 flashed on. The young woman smiled and recited her lines--one more time.

Re "Classmates Mourn Loss of Star Athlete," April 24: I was touched by the efforts of the friends and classmates of Jordan Connolly in their construction of a small tribute to him in the campus quad of Huntington Beach High School. It is important that these kids have an outlet for their grief at the loss of their friend in such a tragic car accident. What is even more tragic, however, is the complete lack of sensitivity shown to these students by the administration of the high school by their destruction of this remembrance and threats by school security to the students gathered there that they would be arrested if they did not disperse.

Huntington Beach High School students paid tribute Monday to Jordan Connolly, the popular senior and talented football player killed last week in a spring break car crash. "He worked real hard," Mark Kleinpeter, offensive coordinator for the school's Oilers football team, said of Jordan, whose dream was to play professionally. "He was definitely a leader on the field and the guy that was definitely going to play somewhere." Under a tree in the campus quad, Jordan's No.
