Laguna Police Department officials said they don't plan to file any charges after a dog belonging to the stepdaughter of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords killed a sea lion in Laguna Beach over the weekend. Police did not cite the owner “because it was legal for her to have the dog on the beach this time of year, and she did have it leashed. It was so strong that it pulled free of her when it saw the [sea lion],” said Laguna Beach Police Capt. Jason Kravetz. It's illegal for an owner to encourage a dog to attack marine life.

John and Linda Sohus told friends they wanted to move out. They had been married a little over a year and talked about leaving the house they shared with John's mother in San Marino. When Linda's close friend Susan Coffman visited the home in the mid-1980s, she asked why the Sohuses did not live in the property's guesthouse in the backyard. "There's a renter who lives there, and we don't talk to him because he's kind of creepy," Linda told her, Coffman testified Monday. Prosecutors contend that the renter, Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, murdered John Sohus, whose decomposed body was dug up in 1994, nearly a decade after John and Linda Sohus vanished.

Question: My husband had a stroke two years ago. He can walk short distances and maneuver some stairs, but we always take a wheelchair. I have just retired and would love to do some traveling, and a riverboat cruise in Europe is at the top of my bucket list. Are there trips that could accommodate this situation? Would shore excursions be a problem, or are we restricted to drive-bys? Charlotte Lechlak Encino Answer: River cruising is the hot ticket in 2013, especially if Europe is your destination.

The press notes for "If I Were You" indicate that writer-director Joan Carr-Wiggin's favorite director is Preston Sturges, but there's little of the master's zip, wit or taste for desperate absurdity in this ill-conceived marital farce. Moments after discovering her husband is cheating - unbeknown to him - Madelyn (Marcia Gay Harden) follows the distraught mistress (Leonor Watling) home, saves her from suicide, then befriends her as a way of keeping tabs on the affair. REVIEW: More movie reviews from the Times To complicate matters, Madelyn, who is also grappling with her mother's terminal illness, lands the role of King Lear in a local play, the same production in which Watling's character plays the fool.

It was a story Dorothy Atwood DeBolt enjoyed telling, one that any harried parent of young children might find somewhat familiar. The phone rang one day as the busy mother raced around her home, getting ready for an out-of-town trip and wrapping up housework before her kids got home. She answered and a child said: "Mom, this is Jennifer. Can I go to the playground after school?" DeBolt replied: "Sure, honey, but be home by 5," and hung up. Seconds later, she said aloud: "Oh my God, we don't have a kid named Jennifer.
