The City Council on Tuesday approved a development agreement for a 35,000-square-foot banquet and meeting-room facility at the Hyatt Alicante Hotel complex. For the construction of the banquet hall and a previously approved conversion of an office building to an all-suites hotel, developers have agreed to put $200,000 toward the city's Harbor Boulevard improvement project. Chocolate lovers can get their fill of the sinful stuff--from truffles to cakes, dark to milk--Friday at the YWCA of North Orange County's Chocolate Fantasy. The fund-raiser will feature all the chocolate one can eat, hors d'oeuvres, country and western music, and live and silent auctions. Organizers hope to raise enough money to retire the agency's accumulated debt. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Alicante, 100 Plaza Alicante, Garden Grove.

About 30 fifth-graders from Clinton-Mendenhall Elementary School in Garden Grove recently took up jobs as housekeepers, chefs, waiters and managers at the Hyatt Regency Alicante near Disneyland. They were among 1,500 fifth-graders nationwide who participated in a May 2 career day sponsored by Hyatt Hotels Corp. Company executives said they hope some of the students will consider careers in the hotel chain or elsewhere in the tourism industry.

The Alicante Princess, the $51-million, towering pink hotel in Garden Grove, has tossed out the hotel's operator, Princess Cruises, and brought in Hyatt Corp. in an apparent effort to boost sagging profits and bring in more guests. Starting Aug. 15, Century City-based Princess Cruises Resorts & Hotels--a relative neophyte in the hotel business--will be out and Hyatt will begin operating the renamed Hyatt Regency Alicante, Chicago-based Hyatt Corp. said Wednesday.
