Kokusai Motorcars Co., part of the KM Group of Tokyo, completed the purchase of the Hyatt Regency Maui in Hawaii for $319 million in cash. The seller was an investment partnership affiliated with VMS Realty Inc., of Chicago. The Hyatt Regency Maui, on an 18.4-acre site in the Kaanapali Beach Resort Development, will continue to be managed by Hyatt Corp.

* Coyote Network Systems Inc., telecommunications networking company, has filed for an extension of its deadline for reporting its fiscal third-quarter results for the period ended Dec. 31, 1999. The Westlake Village-based company now expects to file its financial results Feb. 22. The company reported operating losses in the year-ago quarter and for fiscal second-quarter ended Sept. 30, 1999. Shares fell 19 cents to close at $7.63 on Nasdaq.

The same type of gizmo that provided electricity to astronauts on their way to the moon now supplies the power for hair dryers and hot water for showers at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Wednesday, the chairmen of Southern California Gas Co. and the Irvine Co., which owns the hotel, proudly showed off a fuel cell they touted as the first in the nation to provide nearly pollution-free electricity directly to the public.

The scheduled opening of the $64-million downtown Hyatt Regency hotel in April is expected by its developers, officials of the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency and the business community to stimulate the capital's already-booming convention business and provide at least 500 new area jobs. The 16-story, 508-room hotel is adjacent to the city's expanding convention center and across the street from the state capitol.

Soaring atriums and top-floor eateries became trademarks of Hyatt's Regency hotels when the first of these "super hotels" opened in Atlanta in the early 1970s. The Barcino dining room at the new Hyatt Regency hotel in the Golden Triangle's Aventine complex differs both as to location and the spin it puts on such dishes as braised duck pasta and swordfish in saffroned potato broth. Barcino actually is down a flight of stairs from the main lobby.

Comedian Bernie Mac encountered some heckling and a campaign rebuke during a surprise appearance Friday night at a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Toward the end of a 10-minute stand-up routine at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago, the 50-year-old star of "The Bernie Mac Show" joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and occasionally used crude language.
