The Salsa has sold Ian Feuer, a 6-foot-6 goalkeeper who started 19 American Professional Soccer League games for the team last season, to West Ham United of England's Premier Division for an undisclosed amount. Feuer, who had four shutouts and a 1.476 goals-against average, will be the first U.S. goalkeeper to join England's top level of soccer, the team said. The Salsa released midfielder Dale Ervine, a former indoor star who scored two goals in 18 starts last season.

Ian Feuer, who earns his paychecks by keeping goal for the Salsa, vividly remembers his first championship game. It was three years ago, and he was playing for Club Brugge in Belgium. He was a third-team goalkeeper then, so he remembers the atmosphere surrounding the game rather than any action. "It was pretty exciting," he said, smiling. "The whole city was jumping in water fountains."

There are nights when Ian Feuer feels like a 6-foot-6 duck in a soccer shooting gallery. Nights when the porous defense of the New England Revolution is especially faulty and the crosses and headers and corner kicks come at him in waves. In some of these games, Feuer was outstanding--and still surrendered four or five goals. It is not the happy homecoming he envisioned when he returned to the United States in March after playing in the English First Division.
