As the winger streaks along the right sideline of the soccer field, Ian Feuer sneaks behind a defender a few yards in front of the enemy goal and waits for the play to develop. The wait is short. A crossing pass from the winger lands at Feuer's feet, which are pointing away from the goal, but he still manages to get off an improvisational heel kick that catches the goalkeeper napping and increases the blue team's lead over the white team during an L.A.

There are nights when Ian Feuer feels like a 6-foot-6 duck in a soccer shooting gallery. Nights when the porous defense of the New England Revolution is especially faulty and the crosses and headers and corner kicks come at him in waves. In some of these games, Feuer was outstanding--and still surrendered four or five goals. It is not the happy homecoming he envisioned when he returned to the United States in March after playing in the English First Division.

The Salsa released midfielder Dale Ervine, a former indoor star who scored two goals in 18 starts last season.

Ian Feuer, who earns his paychecks by keeping goal for the Salsa, vividly remembers his first championship game. It was three years ago, and he was playing for Club Brugge in Belgium. He was a third-team goalkeeper then, so he remembers the atmosphere surrounding the game rather than any action. "It was pretty exciting," he said, smiling. "The whole city was jumping in water fountains."
