IT'S the flicker of candlelight, the lick of a fire, the aroma of the ocean breeze. It's the crowd, effortlessly good-looking without pretense, and the stuffed sofas that make it impossible to be uncomfortable. Glow in Marina del Rey is the most enticing club on the Westside. The fact that it's located at a Marriott hotel is in many ways astounding. "Glow has brought a very hip new energy to the area," says Valerie Arais, a marketing executive who frequents the harbor-front nightspot.

THANKS to Travel Log ["Gramercy Makeover Goes Artsy," Aug. 6], I now know that the funky, charming Gramercy Park Hotel in New York has received a full makeover. But who are these "haute bohemians" (words of hotelier Ian Schrager) targeted by the Nouveau Gramercy? Snobby beatniks? Layabouts beating their bongos on the Riviera? Whoever they are, they can afford guest rates of $525 per day, most of which presumably goes to super trendy Pop artists whose works now enliven the lobby walls.

New York hotelier Ian Schrager, whose high-design properties cater to affluent travelers, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for his plush Clift Hotel in San Francisco's theater district. The historic 373-room Clift has been suffering along with the rest of the San Francisco hotel market. The Bay Area has seen a dramatic drop in tourism and business travel since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

For almost a year now, the residents of this wealthy coastal community have been trying to resolve their most troublesome local problem with diplomacy. But now, they say, the time for patience may be coming to an end. The new year could bring a new round of open hostility. The problem is the lack of any tangible progress in the long-promised renovation of the Miramar Hotel, the blue-roofed landmark just off U.S. 101 that long symbolized Montecito's casual chic.

The showdown was only minutes away, and there was an edge to the crowd. They filed into the school auditorium, made their choices among the bottled waters, the little wrapped mints, the Guatemalan roast and Costa Rican decaf, then settled into their seats.

Five years ago boutique hotel magnate Ian Schrager fell in love with San Francisco's grande dame, the Clift Hotel. Commissioned for $1 million in 1913 by lawyer Frederick C. Clift, in a sumptuous Italian Reniassance style, the Clift was billed as the city's first earthquake-and-fireproof hotel. Generations of San Franciscans have celebrated birthdays and anniversaries over prime-rib dinners in the French Room and sipped their first cocktails in the legendary Redwood Room bar.

Hotel magnate Ian Schrager's new luxury hotel in San Francisco has been hit with a racial bias lawsuit one year after he paid $1.08 million to settle charges that he fired "ethnic" employees to hire "cool-looking" white people at his Los Angeles hotel. The suit, filed Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court, charges Schrager's Clift Hotel with terminating a valet parking service because its black and Asian employees did not fit the hotel's image, lawyer R. Stephen Goldstein said Friday.

Ian Schrager and Rande Gerber together brought red hot and cool bars to Schrager's boutique hotels on both coasts. Now the relationship is on the rocks. Earlier this month, Schrager sent bar czar Gerber a letter of intended termination from the Skybar on the Sunset Strip, which, since its opening in late 1996, has been a watering hole for the ultra-hip, stick-thin people in black with real or tenuous ties to show biz. "He's out," says Schrager attorney Stanley Arkin. "Out."

Ian Schrager propelled hotels into the design business. Now he is propelling designer hotels to the next dimension: fun and games. "I'm in the entertainment business," Schrager said from London, where he introduced a new adventure in stylish living. At the Sanderson Hotel, which took in its first paying guests this month, mind games come first.
