The Ice Chalet skating rink in North Hollywood is reopening on Thursday, joining just two other businesses that have reopened in the Laurel Plaza shopping mall since the January earthquake caused major damage there. The Art of Collecting retail shop and the Wide World Tours travel agency in Laurel Plaza are also open. But the mall's owner, Forest City Enterprises Inc., has so far declined to say if the rest of the mall will remain closed.

The Ice Chalet, a Costa Mesa skating rink that since the 1970s has been the training site for a long line of world-class and professional skaters, is closing for good this month. The rink originally opened in 1968. Patrons said they would meet at the rink Saturday morning to plan a protest of the closure.

Despite the face-first spill that left him with a nasty bump above his right eye, Sergio Fernandez was hardly ready to hang up his skates. "I don't care if I fall again. It's just a little pain," said the Chase Street Elementary School fifth-grader, whose foray onto the ice this week was his first try at the sport. Valley skaters take note: The ice machine has cometh. Constructions crews used cranes to lower into place an enormous "ice plant" that will keep the surface of the Valley's newest rink cool and smooth even as temperatures outside reach into triple digits. The rink is part of a $2.5-million, 50,000 square-foot roller- and ice-skating center under construction on the Van Nuys Boulevard site of the former Panorama Bowl.

It's business as usual at the Ice Chalet in Laurel Plaza, except that the rest of the mall resembles a ghost town and many former patrons don't know the rink is operating again. The North Hollywood mall took a hit during the Jan. 17 earthquake from which it has never recovered. There is talk of plowing the whole thing under rather than trying to restore it to its former state. But that didn't stop the chalet from reopening, unlike other longtime tenants.
