KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii - "Don't dip your head into the dark chocolate," a male voice behind me said. Dark melted chocolate swirled in 2-foot-wide pots, filling the air with the scent of cocoa as our group toured the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory in Kailua Kona on the Big Island. During our weeklong trip to the Big Island in October, my husband, Michael, and I had decided that when we weren't snorkeling, we would explore its back roads, an investigation that soon turned into a do-it-yourself foodie tour of the Kona Coast.

Dear Karen: How can I make a good decision about buying an ice cream franchise? Answer: Request a document called the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular, which franchisers are required by law to provide. Next, do your own research on this opportunity. Is it within your budget? "Food concepts are some of the more expensive franchises, but ice cream franchises are on the low end in terms of capital requirements," said Garth Snider, president of FranchiseOpportunities.

The first person besides my mother who believed in me was a man whose last name I never knew. He was my boss, the manager of Swenson's Ice Cream shop. Six foot five, in high topped converse, Ron was 28 and carless in Los Angeles. We knew little about him, except that he made the ice cream store his life. He set about to improve everything, including us. He insisted we tie our hair back tight against the head(so unflattering!). He made us practice scooping until our ice cream balls weighed exactly 3 ounces.

It's medlar season. Which means Mother Moo Creamery in Sierra Madre is making medlar ice cream again -- a rare ice cream from a rare fruit, available for a limited time.   The medlar's a special fruit, related to apples and pears, but most closely to hawthorns. It's hard, dry and astringent when immature, but after a ripening process (called bletting) its pulp turns custardy and tastes like sweet-tart winy apple butter -- with a little cinnamon, even.  Mother Moo owner Karen Klemens this year got her hands on some directly from Ruff House Ranch -- late this season because there wasn't a frost on the ranch until early December.

Humphry Slocombe has created three funky new ice cream flavors for Virgin America fliers, but only one will make the cut for first-class service. Passengers and fans have until Friday to tweet their favorite -- #ButterByMoodlight (buttery with a blueberry glaze), #RedHotBanana (real Red Hot candies mashed into it) or #CoconutBlondAmbition (vanilla marshmallow fluff meets lemon sorbet). (If you don't recognize this hipster ice cream maker, it's the one that uses Bourbon and cornflakes in its Secret Breakfast flavor.)

The sun was shining and the ice cream was melting so Rene Cerritos didn't waste any time. "Chocolate! Chocolate ice cream just for you!" the 18-year-old hollered. "Who wants some?" On Saturday, the high school senior joined 300 students from 36 high schools in a district-wide volunteer day aimed at helping the homeless. Children were bused in to help at six shelters, from Pacoima to Bell to downtown Los Angeles. They served meals, sorted clothes, called donors, picked up trash and painted a mural.

She may no longer be the new girl, but Zooey Deschanel seems to be having some luck making her persona as an awards girl stick. The 33-year-old actress, who headlines the Fox comedy "New Girl," scored her second Golden Globe nomination when the selections were announced Thursday morning. But getting the news to Deschanel nearly required a wacky "New Girl-ish" plan -- she had left her phone in her trailer while shooting the forthcoming post-Super Bowl episode. "I've been up for 20 hours, I'm not fully alive," Deschanel joked.

This post has been corrected. See note at bottom for details. Maybe you've heard about the beloved local ice cream company that's been forced to close its doors because of Obamacare? Earlier this week, Newt Gingrich shared the dreadful news with Sean Hannity on Hannity's radio show. It's awful, just awful, the two men agreed, that small businesses are being driven under by the “job-killing” Affordable Care Act. It didn't take me long to identify the company: Bonnie Doon Ice Cream Corp., an Indiana ice cream maker that also operated a chain of drive-in diners in Mishawaka, South Bend and Elkhart.

Re "A cone of silence?," July 11 There are many people, not just in Long Beach, who have issues with the tinny ice cream truck music. But does anyone remember the old "Good Humor" trucks? I still remember the roofless cab of those spotless white trucks when I was a boy. Above the rear-view mirror was a trio of bells with a string attached, which the Good Humor man pulled to announced his arrival. When we heard the bells, we were met by a man in a white uniform, complete with a hat and bow tie, selling our favorite frozen treats.

The city of Long Beach moved closer Tuesday night to regulating the high-end chimes of ice-cream trucks. The City Council unanimously voted on a measure that would require ice cream truck vendors to comply with the noise ordinance and prohibit them from playing music while serving customers. Councilman Dee Andrews introduced the measure after years of complaints from residents in his district, which includes the Sunrise, Whittier, Wrigley and South Wrigley neighborhoods. "I want to state for the record, I do like ice cream and I enjoy ice cream trucks," Andrews said.
