With strawberries showing up in the market now, how do you know what to look for? Here are some tips on choosing, storing and using berries, courtesy of Food Editor Russ Parsons: Choose the best berries by aroma, not color or size. The flavor of strawberries is complex; only by sniffing around will you be able to get the best. Once you've found the ones that smell the sweetest, check the underside of the box to make sure there's no spoilage. Store strawberries at room temperature for as long as possible.

What's more boring than watching one of the better teams in the NBA blowing out one of the worst? Having to cover it on TV. That's just the situation the viewers and analysts on NBA-TV were in Tuesday night as the Indiana Pacers held a 42-29 halftime lead over the Orlando Magic. But just when the situation seemed about as bleak as it could get, a new hero emerged to save the day: Ice Cream Guy! So-called highlights from the first half of the game were broken up with clips of a bearded male fan, likely in his 20s, trying to enjoy a giant mint chocolate chip ice cream cone while watching the game.

A man was caught on camera during a Magic vs. Pacer game refusing to share his ice cream cone with his girlfriend. He's watching the game, enjoying his ice cream, when all of the sudden, his girlfriend tries to stick her spoon in it. He nonchalantly pulls away causing her to give him her best "oh-no-you-didn't face. " If you're his girlfriend, or any one of her friends, you're probably thinking this guy is a jerk. She just wanted a little ice cream. What's the big deal?

If you're donning the green on St. Patrick's Day and stepping out for a drink or two, then know that there's more to celebrating the holiday than downing green beer or straight Irish whiskey. Try honoring St. Patrick with a swank cocktail -- other than an Irish Car Bomb. Not that there's anything wrong with a shot of Jameson or a little Bailey's in one's Guinness (or is there?). But with all the shamrock-hued cocktails out there, you might as well try a jalapeño-tinged margarita, some rum muddled with fresh herbs, whiskey mixed with vermouths and bitters and mint syrup, or maybe green chartreuse with tropical juices.

Ice-Cream Lab, which serves made-to-order liquid nitrogen ice cream, is opening its first location in Beverly Hills on March 15. "Lab techs" will make your ice cream creations using organic, local ingredients and good ol' liquid nitrogen. Guests can choose from four flavors and seasonal specialties that will be made with a custard or yogurt base. Once a flavor is chosen, the "techs" will use an ice cream machine that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the concoction on the spot. The store is the brainchild of childhood best friends Joseph Lifschutz and Tommy Ngan.

The announcement for various wine events and tastings usually comes in so early, I'll stash the release away, planning to write about the event a couple of weeks before it takes place. Now I'm finding out that's all wrong, because tickets sell out fast, especially to the events that don't require mega-bucks to attend. So here it is: Tickets went on sale a couple of days ago for Family Winemakers of California 's annual Southern California tasting. This year -- the fifth -- it takes place Saturday, March 9, and Sunday, March 10, and shines the light on 175 producers from small, family-owned wineries.

At the commander in chief's inaugural ball at the Washington Convention Center, President Obama will host 4,000 armed service members, Alicia Keyes and Jamie Foxx will perform, and a six-tiered cake from Duff Goldman's Charm City Cakes , of "Ace of Cakes" fame, will be eaten. The cake -- layers of red velvet, lemon poppy seed, pineapple coconut and pumpkin chocolate chip with Swiss buttercream -- is decorated with the presidential seal, emblems of each U.S. military branch, hand-painted red, white and blue stars and stripes, and patriotic fondant bunting.
