Apple Inc., which has taken flak from some users for the design of its new iOS 7 mobile platform, may have already begun making changes to the system's look. The company on Monday unveiled the new operating system with the biggest redesign to the iPhone's software since the device launched in 2007. While some welcomed the new look, others criticized it. Among the top complaints were the lack of consistency in some of the apps' designs and the heavy use of bright, neon colors.

J.C. Penney Co.'s effort to shake up its look isn't going entirely smoothly - the retailer is being sued for $40 million by lighting design and branding firm Hudson + Broad Inc. over its new Fair and Square icon. In a complaint filed with U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Hudson + Broad accused the department store chain of breach of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets. At stake, the large, square fixtures made with Plexiglas and LED lights that J.C. Penney is placing around its stores to mirror its new sharp-edged logo.

A Faberge icon of Jesus Christ in a silver frame studded with rubies, sapphires, pearls and emeralds sold today for $780,000, more than five times its high estimate, at a Sotheby's auction in New York. A Moscow dealer in the room lost to a telephone bidder in a drawn-out, five-minute battle for the icon, made in about 1900. The icon was the most expensive lot in Wednesday's sale of Faberge items, imperial porcelain, icons, bronzes and enamels. On Tuesday, Sotheby's sold $36 million of Russian 19th and 20th century paintings.

An icon of the Virgin Mary that appears to be weeping has been declared a miraculous sign by leaders of the Greek Orthodox Church. The icon, one of several paintings on canvas glued to a low wooden wall in front of the altar at St. Nicholas Albanian Orthodox Church, has drawn thousands of visitors since reports of the tears surfaced in December.

Re "Mystery of the Model," Column One, Sept. 27: It has been 64 years since I first set eyes on Myrna, the white and lithe figure adorning the front walkway to Venice High School. I thought she was beautiful. Legend was that Myrna Loy had attended our school and had posed for the statue. Whether that was true, the "Myrna" came to represent our school. She was an icon, a way to say we were somehow connected to the aura of Hollywood success, and that we were proud of one of our own. After football games, our rivals doused her with paint, but she was quickly cleaned up and stood proudly again, her arms held up to the sky. To see our dear statue lying broken and headless in a heap behind the school gardens was heart-wrenching.

The Russian Orthodox Church will investigate the allegedly miraculous properties of an icon of the country's last czar, Nicholas II, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted a leading clergyman as saying. The icon at Moscow's Church of the Ascension has reportedly been exuding myrrh since Nov. 7, the anniversary of the Bolshevik seizure of power in 1917. The czar and his family were shot by a Bolshevik firing squad in July 1918.

Re "Guilty Plea by Garofalo Ends Finance Probe," Jan. 11: Note to former Huntington Beach Councilman Dave Garofalo: Look up the word "icon" in your Webster's unabridged. You are not an icon. You're not a scapegoat either, which is probably the word you meant to use. Marcia Goodman Santa Ana

When I was a boy, my father took me to see my first live professional basketball game downtown at the Sports Arena. Good parochial school boy that I was, I spent most of the pregame trying to figure out where John F. Kennedy might have stood during the recent Democratic National Convention. Then, I saw the Lakers with Jerry West and Elgin Baylor play the Cincinnati Royals with Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas, and I became a fan for life. In retrospect, it's easy to understand why I did since, like the Boston Celtics' Tommy Heinsohn tells Roland Lazenby in his marvelous book "Jerry West: The Life and Legend of a Basketball Icon," I had seen three of the five finest NBA players ever to take the floor.

It's long been said there are only seven basic story lines in all of literature. Increasingly, the same might be said about cars, whose styles are becoming more of a monoculture with each model year. Sedan or subcompact, each genre seems to be defined by a single, rather predictable silhouette. But not in Van Nuys, where Icon builds low-volume custom automobiles that take classic car shapes and updates them with modern, under-the-hood technologies and stylish in-the-cabin appointments pulled from aircraft, boats and fine watches.

Regarding "Singer Clooney's Home Is Sold" (Hot Property, April 27): I can understand that a recently deceased well-known entertainer's home in Beverly Hills has been sold; life goes on. But it's tragic that "the buyer, a businessman who owns several large retail and wholesale properties in the downtown L.A. fashion district, plans to raze the house." This undoubtedly classic and beautiful home was owned by Rosemary Clooney for 50 years and before that by an American icon, George Gershwin.
