Federal officials found no signs of stowaways Thursday on a cargo ship diverted to an Alaskan port after its captain became alarmed that one or more people might be trapped inside a sealed shipping container. The incident aboard the MV Manoa, on its way to San Pedro from China and other Asian ports, began Sunday when crew members said they heard a pounding noise coming from inside a cargo container deep inside the ship's hold.

Nine undocumented Chinese immigrants being held for ransom in Monterey Park wrested a gun from their captors early Tuesday and shot one to death before fleeing, authorities said. The immigrants--some of whom had been in captivity for three months--scattered after the confrontation at the three-bedroom bungalow, said Fidel Gonzales, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

The U.S. Coast Guard on Sunday kept up its five-day seagoing detention of more than 650 illegal Chinese immigrants aboard three ships. One immigrant woman suffering from abdominal pains was taken by Coast Guard helicopter for emergency surgery, officials said. Doctors at UC San Diego Medical Center performed surgery of an unspecified nature on the 19-year-old woman, identified as Shiuyun Zhou, a passenger on the disabled freighter Sing Li 6, one of the three vessels.

Hundreds of increasingly restless Chinese immigrants remained in Coast Guard custody aboard three idle ships near Ensenada on Saturday, adrift in a flurry of negotiations between the United States and Mexico. But there was apparent progress Saturday toward agreement on a U.S. request that Mexico detain and repatriate the 659 immigrants waiting on the smuggling vessels that were intercepted last week, U.S. officials said.
