A shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported Sunday afternoon eight miles from Indio, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 12:14 p.m. PDT at a depth of 1.9 miles. According to the USGS, the epicenter was nine miles from Coachella, 15 miles from La Quinta, and 16 miles from Palm Desert. In the past 10 days, there have been no earthquakes magnitude 3 and greater centered nearby. Read more about Southern California earthquakes . Any uncertainty over the long-term home for Goldenvoice's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and its country cousin Stagecoach has come to an end. Indio on Wednesday granted approval of Goldenvoice's proposal to stage and expand its festival offerings in the desert city, clearing the way for an agreement that will keep Coachella and Stagecoach in Indio through at least 2030. Goldenvoice, a subsidary of AEG Live, has in turn agreed to increase the amount of per-ticket revenue it shares with the city begining in 2014.

Travel packages for the 2013 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio this month are probably the most decadent way to do the big desert fest, but so what? If you've got money to spend, buying a package to the sold-out event features a hotel room, festival pass and shuttle for three glorious days. The festival runs on two weekends - April 12 to 14 and April 19 to 21 - with headliners Blur, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phoenix and more than 170 other musical acts . Tickets priced at $399 for a three-day pass and shuttle sold out quickly when they went on sale in January.

Coachella just got a bit less grizzled. Citing "unavoidable complications," Lou Reed announced Tuesday that he has canceled his planned appearance at next month's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, scheduled to bring artists including Blur, Phoenix and Red Hot Chili Peppers to the Empire Polo Club in Indio. The annual weekend-long festival is to take place April 12-14 and again April 19-21. Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum and the Zac Brown Band will anchor the 2013 edition of the country-focused Stagecoach festival, which once again will be held over three late April days at the Empire Polo Grounds in the desert city of Indio. Now in its seventh year, the Goldenvoice-produced festival takes a wide-open view of roots music, booking contemporary Nashville acts alongside legends and newcomers. The event will take place April 26-28, the weekend directly following next year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Goldenvoice, the promoter behind the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, is aiming to secure a home for its desert festival through 2030. The promoter's current contract with the city of Indio, Calif., expires after the 2013 event, but Goldenvoice's ambitions extend well beyond obtaining a long-term contract for Coachella. The city of Indio has released documents that offer a glimpse into the promoter's festival plans, which, if approved, would add up to two music events to the calendar year.

Re "An all-male college's future," Editorial, May 25 So the trustees of Deep Springs College want to start enrolling women despite the founding financial trust that established it as a male-only school. I'm sure the trustor didn't mean "mankind. " As these trusts continue to be reinterpreted, more and more generous people will rethink the final disposition of their funds. The Rhodes Trust was reinterpreted to include women, and UCLA is considering violating the wishes of a woman who donated a Japanese garden.

Inside his mini-mart in the desert town of Indio, store manager John Stafford is busy stockpiling caffeinated drinks. Monster and Red Bulls mostly. He knows from experience that he'll need plenty this weekend. Tens of thousands of visitors will descend upon the desert region beginning Friday for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. "Cigarettes and energy drinks," Stafford said. "They need to stay awake out there. " Fans and bands may need an extra stamina boost this year.
