Ingram Micro D Inc. of Santa Ana, the nation's largest wholesaler of microcomputer products, said it signed an agreement to market and distribute certain Micron Technology Inc. products. Ingram said it will handle a line of computer memory boards and add-in boards made by Micron, a Boise, Ida., firm. Ingram Chairman Lynwood A. (Chip) Lacy said the agreement is a "significant new relationship" for the company. The value of the contract and other details were not disclosed.

With a curious sense of timing, giant Ingram Micro Inc. has filed for permission to sell stock to the public for the first time despite a softened market for technology issues and the fact that the company hasn't replaced its recently departed chief executive. The Santa Ana-based company, which until now has remained a private firm even though it is the largest computer products distributor in the world, plans to offer 20 million shares of stock.

Ingram Micro Inc. said Wednesday that it has hired a top-ranking IBM executive to fill its long-vacant position of president. Samuel M. Inman III, who headed an International Business Machines Corp. subsidiary that sells low-priced personal computers, is expected to fill Ingram's needs for a high-powered marketing director and day-to-day manager. As president and chief operating officer, Inman will oversee and manage the privately held company's U.S. operations.

Western Digital Corp. has selected Ingram Micro D as the exclusive distributor of some of its computer graphics products. Under the one-year agreement, Ingram Micro D of Santa Ana, a distributor of personal computer products, will distribute video board products supplied by Western Digital's Paradise Systems subsidiary. Roger W. Johnson, chief executive of Western Digital, said the company, which is based here, chose Ingram Micro D after an extensive review of its distribution strategy.

Don't tell the folks over at Ingram Micro D that there's a slump in the computer industry. The Santa Ana-based computer distributor says its sales jumped a whopping 54%--to $367 million--during the third quarter compared to a year earlier. "If there is an industry slowdown in progress," says company Chairman Linwood A. (Chip) Lacy, "(Ingram Micro D) has not experienced it." Ingram Micro D said the company's U.S. sales for the quarter ended Sept. 30 grew 46% from the year-earlier period.

CalComp Inc. has struck a deal to sell about $30-million worth of computer products through Ingram Micro D. Ingram Micro D of Santa Ana, the nation's largest wholesaler of microcomputer products, said Wednesday that it will become the national distributor of CalComp's computer graphics products designed for Apple Computer's Macintosh and other manufacturers' personal computers. "I think it could be a very significant deal for us," CalComp President William Conlin said.

MarketPlace is considered a breakthrough package because it combines a massive database of business and consumer information with programs that will enable users to tailor the data to their specific needs and to generate mailing lists, labels and personalized sales pitches.

Ingram Micro Inc., the large distributor of computer products, signed an $18-million lease for 215,000 square feet in two "build-to-suit" structures Santa Ana that will serve as the company's headquarters and warehouse. It was one of the largest leases--in terms of space--signed recently in Orange County. The build-to-suit transaction--where the developer doesn't build until a tenant is signed up--probably will become more common in Orange County's overbuilt office market.

Dukes, who will also serve as chief operating officer, since 1986 has been regional president of Inacomp Computer Centers Inc., responsible for the national chain's operations in Florida and Georgia. Ingram Micro D is the nation's largest wholesaler and distributor of PC products; its 1989 sales are expected to top $1 billion.
