Inter-Continental Hotels is another chain offering a summer promotion, with discounts 20% to 50% off regular rates at 66 properties in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Rates are per room per night. One child under 14 years can stay free at the same price, but more than two people are extra. Except for Latin America, discounts are available for rooms throughout the week. In North America the program runs until Sept. 10. There is a minimum-stay requirement of two nights, and some dates are not available.

So consider this summer offer from the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts luxury chain: a free night on a five-night stay plus 100 euros (about $148) in hotel credit. The deal: InterContinental hotels aren't cheap; room rates start around $300 a night in top European cities.

British conglomerate Bass said Friday that it agreed to buy the Inter-Continental Hotels & Resorts chain from Japan's Saison Group for $2.9 billion in cash and assumed debt. Britain's second-largest brewer, which is already in the hotel business and operates restaurants and pubs, will pay $1.4 billion in cash for Inter-Continental. It will also assume $1.044 billion of the hotel chain's debt and pay off $450 million of its debt.

THE Willard InterContinental, a historic hotel near the White House that has hosted power brokers for decades, is making a pitch for vacationers to Washington. Under the tutelage of its new French general manager, Herve Houdre, a veteran of the tony Hotel de Crillon and Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris, the Willard has opened a sidewalk cafe on Pennsylvania Avenue, put up a history gallery and started serving afternoon tea.

InterContinental Hotels Group, the world's biggest lodging company by number of rooms, took over the operation of a 363-room hotel in Century City, bolstering its presence in the U.S. luxury hotel market. The InterContinental Los Angeles Century City, previously the Park Hyatt, has 12,500 square feet of space for functions. Windsor, England-based InterContinental Hotels Group has a 10-year contract to manage the hotel on Avenue of the Stars. The hotel is owned by Tokyo-based Sumitomo Realty.

If you're a business traveler who books hotel rooms via the Internet, you may be at higher risk of being victimized by computer hackers and identity thieves. Insurance claims for data theft worldwide jumped 56% last year, with a bigger number of those attacks targeting the hospitality industry, according to a new report by Willis Group Holdings, a British insurance firm. The report said the largest share of cyber attacks — 38% — were aimed at hotels, resorts and tour companies.

Inter-Continental Hotels has put in a bid for family business this summer with discounts at nine of its domestic properties. The discounts are available only to families, two or more persons to a room with a maximum of four. You also have to stay a minimum of two consecutive nights. There is one discounted price for deluxe rooms, which varies from hotel to hotel. The discount off regular rates for these rooms ranges from 15% to 68%, according to Inter-Continental.
