Chuck Hartlieb was embarrassed early, but he left Northwestern red-faced. Hartlieb, with help from flanker Quinn Early, threw a Big Ten-record seven touchdown passes Saturday to lead Iowa to a 52-24 victory over the Wildcats. "I was throwing good," said Hartlieb, who completed 25 of 32 passes for 471 yards. "They came at me hard the first couple of series but things got going for us and the rest speaks for itself."

Russell Wilson, the dynamic but undersized rookie from Wisconsin, is the latest young quarterback to set the NFL abuzz. Wilson got his first start with the Seattle Seahawks on Friday night and led the offense to scores on six conseuctive possessions in a 44-14 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Wilson was drafted in the third round after Seattle had signed veteran Packers backup Matt Flynn to take the helm this fall. Wilson, who passed for 185 yards and two touchdowns Friday, could become the fifth rookie starter at quarterback if the Seahawks choose him over Flynn.

Crenshaw scored all of its points in the first half, then focused on shutting down archrival Dorsey in tonight's 41-0 victory that kept the Cougars on track for their second straight Coliseum League title. Ajene Harris threw three touchdown passes and Davien Risher had an interception and a touchdown reception for Crenshaw (3-4, 2-0), which opened a 27-0 lead in the first quarter. Noah Whitney threw three interceptions for Dorsey (3-4, 1-1), which lost to its neighborhood rival for the third consecutive time since the Dons' 7-6 triumph on their way to the league crown in 2011.

Cal State Fullerton safety Trent Baker, whose school-record, 97-yard interception return for a touchdown helped the Titans rally Saturday to beat Idaho State, 35-25, was named the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. defensive player of the week. Baker had seven solo tackles and seven assists along with the interception that helped the Titans recapture the momentum late in the first quarter after trailing, 10-0. Baker, a senior from Los Angeles, also broke up two Idaho State passes.

For more than 50 years, the National Football League has struggled with the problem of how to rate passers statistically. Passing champions have been crowned in nine different ways, as follows: 1932-37: Most yards gained passing. 1938-40: Completion percentage. 1941-48: Best record in six categories--total completions, completion percentage, total yards, touchdowns, interceptions, interception percentage. 1949: Same as 1941-48 but minus interception percentage.

USC's search for a starting quarterback apparently is over. Coach Lane Kiffin said Sunday night that he would announce the starter after meeting Monday with Cody Kessler and Max Wittek. Kessler and Wittek, both third-year sophomores, split time during the Trojans' season-opening victory at Hawaii and in Saturday's 10-7 loss to Washington State. In two games, with appearances that totaled just more than four quarters, Kessler has completed 18 of 32 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions.

Tony Gullotto, Southwestern College's freshman free safety, has been a busy player of late. In the last two weeks, he has intercepted five passes. Three came last Saturday in Southwestern's 31-16 win over Rancho Santiago (formerly Santa Ana) as the Apaches improved their Mission Conference record to 3-0 and overall record to 5-0. Gullotto's performance tied a school record set by John King, who now plays at San Jose State.
