Authorities were investigating the death Sunday of a man who was hit by a car on the southbound Interstate 5 just south of the San Onofre border checkpoint, officials said. The unidentified man was struck at 6:53 p.m. while crossing the freeway about a mile south of the checkpoint, which is about three miles south of San Clemente, California Highway Patrol spokesman Ted Prola said.

Authorities have been unable to identify a man who was killed Sunday crossing the freeway near the immigration checkpoint south of San Clemente, the first traffic fatality there in two years. The victim was struck while crossing Interstate 5, apparently while running with another man who suffered only minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol. The second man, Miguel Pano, 28, also was hit by a car.

Standing in the middle of California's busy Interstate 5 south of here on Wednesday, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Roy. D. Villareal saw the blue car zip by without stopping. He immediately hopped into a patrol car and within seconds, caught up to the vehicle and had the driver pull over onto the freeway's shoulder. When Villareal returned, he and his partner were asked what the driver had to say.

A 22-year-old Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton died early Thursday in a high-speed motorcycle accident on Interstate 5. California Highway Patrol officers said Jeremy Booth of Minnesota was traveling more than 100 mph about 1 a.m. when he lost control of a new Suzuki on the southbound freeway just north of Oso Parkway. He died at the scene.

Water service has been fully restored to one city neighborhood affected by last week's break of a main water pipeline in Irvine. The break affected residents and businesses in the neighborhood bordered by Interstate 5, Ortega Highway and La Novia Avenue. Water service in the neighborhood was back to normal Monday after the Metropolitan Water District fixed the broken line.

A partnership formed by Tejon Ranch Co. and Dermody Properties will build a 650,000-square-foot distribution building in the Tejon Industrial Complex in Kern County. Construction on the building is scheduled to begin in April and is expected to be completed late this year. The structure will be next to a 1.8-million-square foot distribution center being built for the home-furnishings chain IKEA.

A driver was killed and his passenger injured Saturday when their pickup was hit by a spare tire that came off a cement truck on Interstate 5. California Highway Patrol officers said the cement truck was traveling south just before 8 a.m. when it lost the tire, which rolled over the center divider and flew into the cab of the oncoming pickup. The pickup driver, a Bellflower resident whose name was withheld, died at the scene. His unidentified passenger was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

An Orange County Transportation Authority committee recommended Monday that $500,000 be earmarked to provide free towing service on weekends for Interstate 5. The Highway Patrol made the request to fund an 18-month pilot program in South County because of heavy weekend traffic from Alicia Parkway south to the San Diego County border.
