Every time salesman Shan Schannep drove by Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre on his way to work in Costa Mesa, he'd see the dates of the next Pacific Symphony summer concert listed on the marquee and think about taking his wife to hear the orchestra. "I'd see it and I'd go, 'Oh, that would be fun,' " Schannep said recently. "But we never did it, we never did it, we never did it." Finally, however, Schannep did it.

"This summer, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra will finally flip its lid." So say the brochures. In 1988, Benjamin Pasternack won the 40th Busoni International Piano Competition. He won the grand prize by unanimous vote the following year at the inaugural World Music Masters Piano Competition in Paris. In 1993, Pasternack teaches piano students at Boston University one day a week ("not that many," he said), plays perhaps 30 performances per year ("not a lot," he said) and remains without a recording contract. What gives?

Can Southern California use another concert amphitheater? Blockbuster, the Miami-based company best known for its video stores, is staking its considerable bankroll on it--and a survey of music industry executives in the area says the company will need every penny of it. The Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion is under construction now on the site of the 1982 and '83 US Festivals near San Bernardino and is scheduled to open this summer.
