And what is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days. Then Heaven tries the earth if it be in tune, And over it softly her warm ear lays. --James Russell Lowell, 19th century American man of letters * I wanna rock and roll all nite, and party every day. --Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, 20th century American gargoyles of rock * If Heaven should softly cup its warm ear earthward over Irvine Meadows on Saturday evening, as Mr. Lowell imagined, it is in for a hell of a shock.

Every time salesman Shan Schannep drove by Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre on his way to work in Costa Mesa, he'd see the dates of the next Pacific Symphony summer concert listed on the marquee and think about taking his wife to hear the orchestra. Music director Carl St.Clair divulged how his organization goes about building such a season, which opens Saturday with a pops-oriented "Stars & Stripes on Broadway" program.

Not even the legendary 76 trombones are a match for 75 rock bands. In a concert that shapes up as possibly the biggest parade of grass-roots talent the Orange County music scene has ever witnessed, 75 bands, most of them new or emerging local acts, are scheduled to blare today from six stages on the grounds of Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. The 12-hour marathon, which gets underway at 12:30 p.m., is dubbed Independent's Day '94.

A Harbor City man was stabbed in the neck, chest and stomach Sunday night during a heavy-metal concert at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, raising new concern about security measures at the popular venue, police and city officials said Monday. Phillip Delarosa, 23, was listed in guarded condition at a local hospital after the 11 p.m. attack during a concert by the group Anthrax, said Irvine Police Sgt. Tom Hume.
