Dr. Ivan Namihas, the former Tustin gynecologist who became the subject of the largest-ever sexual-abuse medical investigation in California history, was convicted Monday at his retrial on 15 counts of mail fraud. Jurors deliberated for five hours before agreeing that the 63-year-old doctor duped nine patients into believing they had deadly diseases, such as cancer and AIDS, then used the mails to bill them and their insurance companies for unnecessary laser surgery.

A federal grand jury has issued a new indictment against ex-Tustin gynecologist Ivan C. Namihas, charging him with five additional counts of mail fraud. The new indictment means that Namihas will face 15 counts of mail fraud at his retrial, which is scheduled for May, 1996. Namihas' first trial ended last March in a hung jury with jurors split 10 to 2 in favor of conviction. Assistant U.S. Atty.

Namihas ended in a hung jury Monday after emotionally exhausted jurors announced they could not reach a verdict on any of the 10 mail fraud charges against the doctor. The jury's announcement, which resulted in a mistrial, came on the seventh day of deliberations that several jurors later described as highly emotional and fraught with shouting and even threats.
