Four outstanding running backs--Ivan Wilson of South Gate, Charles Levy of Lynwood, Ron Papazian of Whittier Christian and Rudy Ramirez of Bell Gardens--head the 1989 Times Southeast All-Star High School Football Team. Together, those four seniors ran for more than 4,000 yards this season. Whittier High, which won its first league title in more than 20 years, placed four players on the first team. South Gate and El Rancho each have three players on the team.

Harbor College scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, capped by Jon Williams' 33-yard field goal with three seconds remaining, to rally for a 24-21 Western State Conference victory over host Compton on Saturday. The Seahawks (6-0, 5-0 in conference play) trailed, 21-7, entering the fourth quarter after Compton quarterback Enrique Arnero's three touchdown passes.

They call it the Special K at Reseda High and on Friday night, it bailed out the team. Reseda beat South Gate, 18-13, in a first-round City Section 2-A playoff game on a last-minute touchdown pass to kicker George Konstantinopoulos, the "K" who made the play special.

The El Camino College football team has relied heavily on its defense and Saturday's Mission Conference game against Pasadena City College was no exception. The Warriors held the Lancers to their worst offensive game of the season in a 35-15 victory at Murdock Stadium in Torrance. Quarterback Edward Hervey, Pasadena's leading rusher, was held to 88 yards in 23 carries and completed only eight of 22 passes for 99 yards. He was sacked seven times.

The Harbor College football team's hopes of an unbeaten season were dashed Saturday night by Santa Barbara, as the visiting Vaqueros used two big fourth quarter plays to help score a 34-14 Western State Conference victory at Harbor. Harbor, which rallied for 17 points in the fourth quarter last week to defeat Compton, 24-21, trailed 17-7 going into the final quarter on Saturday.

Saddleback College got the big plays from the usual folks on offense Saturday, but it was the defense that really stepped up in a 35-17 victory over El Camino in a Mission Conference game at El Camino. Marcellus Chrishon, a preseason all-American, rushed for 187 yards in 35 carries and two touchdowns for Saddleback (4-0), which is the top-ranked team in the nation by the J.C. Grid-Wire. It was the 12th consecutive victory for Saddleback dating to last season.

One thing is becoming increasingly clear about the El Camino football team: The Warriors are only good half of the time. For the second consecutive week, El Camino allowed an opponent to erase a big first-half deficit and get back into the game. But like they did the previous week, the Warriors rebounded at the most opportune moment.

Sophomore running back Ivan Wilson set a Mission Conference record with six rushing touchdowns as El Camino beat Orange Coast, 41-25, Saturday at El Camino. Wilson, from South Gate High School, led all rushers with 256 yards in 26 carries and scored on runs of 18, one, eight, two, three and 56 yards. His final touchdown came with 1 minute 11 seconds left and gave El Camino (5-1, 4-1 in conference) a 41-25 lead.

Defending Division III champion Paramount and La Mirada, the surprise team of Division VI, are the only Southeast/Long Beach area teams remaining in the CIF Southern Section high school football playoffs. Paramount (11-1) will play Capistrano Valley (12-0) Friday night at the Santa Ana Bowl. In another Friday semifinal, La Mirada (9-3) will play host to La Quinta (8-4). Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
