Izusu Expects Return to Profitability: Isuzu Motors, in which General Motors Corp. has more than a one-third holding, intends to return to profit through drastic cost-cutting and other steps, senior managing director Hiromichi Matsuka said Friday. After two months of testimony on subjects ranging from auto dynamics to journalism ethics, Isuzu Motors' $242-million product-disparagement and defamation lawsuit against Consumer Reports magazine went to a federal jury Friday. The Japanese auto maker has accused the magazine and its nonprofit parent, Consumers Union, of rigging tests to show that the 1995-96 Trooper sport utility vehicle is prone to rolling over during emergency lane changes.

A woman who lost a leg and suffered brain injuries in an Isuzu Rodeo rollover accident was awarded $3.7 million by a jury that found the auto company negligent in testing the sport utility vehicle. Irene Gutierrez, now 23, was one of four passengers when the driver lost control while changing lanes at about 70 mph and the 1995 Rodeo tipped over on March 21, 1996.
